I bought the last Gran Turismo for PS4 and I was absolutely underwhelmed. I remember playing this in the PS2/PS3 era and there was some nice carreer. But damn, only 1v1 online without AI drivers? How lazy can they be?
Also... how believable are the reviews from digital foundry, given that they preferred the handling of PCARS 3

Yea that PCARS 3 thing is mind bending, that game was pure arcade garbage compared to the first two.
I doesn't look bad by any stretch of the imagination, it just has a very boring presentation—like all GT games. There is a big difference. Some of this boring presentation is good; no "yo yo gangsta yo coolio wigga come on ayyyyy papi" but then, replays are really bland. Somehow they kill all the perceptible speed of the cars by using the worst camera angles and movements.

It doesn't look bad true, just far from something especially good. Basically, all the games in the franchise had replays like this, but what you say is valid. I suspect its fine for a GT game, but they lost that something that made them great a long time ago. Could be wrong, but highly doubt it.
There isn't another driving game that looks this good right now. Don't say Forza Horizon 5. It doesn't look like this. None of the real simulators look as well either. Assetto Corsa Competizione is an Unreal Engine turd with tons of disgusting and sticking screen-space effects. There was a video of Ride 4 or 5 or 923801 that made the rounds as the "most amaz0mg grafix of raecing omfg nextg3n", but that one is also an Unreal Engine crapola. This one (on PS5) has very little pop-in (still not perfect, look at the trees), very little screen-space reflections, etc. A very stable image. So I do think it looks very good actually. What exactly do you expect here? This is not a stylized Need for Speed.
What’s with retarded japans and unskippable stupid intro credits + promo videos?
The game is OK. AI isn’t ramming into you like in Grid Legends. Driving is nice. Make sure to put the wobble mode to 2 in the cockpit camera settings. The sense of speed is very mediocre, even at 60fps. Not sure why. The presentation is “boring”, but a good boring—clean and without too many effects. Maybe it’s the lack of “speed blur” that hurts sense of speed, not sure. Replays are terrible. Terrible camera positions, giving an even worse sense of speed. In 30fps replays, I could watch them at all. At 60fps, they are more tolerable.
