At first I was thinking it might be another typical drama show but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Very uplifting show which makes it a nice change from all the current insanity.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

What's with all the Korea lately? Have they always had strong series, but only now surface due to Netflix looking to cut cost, or are they having a sudden golden age? A lot of shows in the span of a few years. Very Happy

This + NF seeing that their Korean stuff (that costs a lot less than their Hollylol stuff) is hitting it off a lot more with the international audience rather than garbage remakes like Cowboy Bebop Laughing

1 and 2 are still amazing.

They've always had very strong movies.
Their shows on the other hand have been very mixed for me.
5-10 years back and before that their shows were similar to what Japanese shows are now, where they employ a lot of idols/singers/popular people as actors, which kinda ruins everything.

But I've found at least from the last 5 years or so, they've stepped up their game (and budgets).
I think Train to Busan did a lot to promote Korean entertainment, even people around me who would never think to watch a non American movie have seen Train to Busan.
They do have quite a lot of soap opera-like shows, which can be skipped, in particular romance oriented shows.

What I really like about Korean entertainment (in particular their movies) is that they're not afraid to kill main characters, give us super negative or bitter endings (I Saw The Devil, The Wailing), make super uncomfortable scenarios (Parasite, Old Boy) or just truly dark and "gray" movies that emotionally drain you (The Yellow Sea).
In fact, now that I think about it, I think I can count on one hand the amount of Korean movies I've seen that actually had happy endings, and I've seen a shitload of them. xD
The only western movie I've seen in recent years that gave me the same unpredictable and interesting take is Nightcrawler (2014) and Blue Ruin (2013).

I like happy feel-movies as much as any one else but sometimes I just want to watch something that surprises me in some way, and Korean movies are perfect for that.

+1 to all of that

I started watching foreign stuff almost exclusively in 2020, I add them to the list each time:

https://www.imdb.com/user/ur61352001/ratings?sort=your_rating,desc&ratingFilter=0&mode=detail&ref_=undefined&lastPosition=0

It's mostly Korean. Watching The Silent Sea at the moment. Move to heaven sounds decent too, added to the backlog!

Hopefully the popularity doesn't begin to turn it all to shit. Train to Busan > Peninsula, for example...

It was going well until the episode with the cellist

I mean... how many times did they make it obvious it was going to be a man, yet they drew out the 'mystery' for ~20 minutes Laughing

I suspect this was done to cater to the conservative audience who believe being gay or lesbian is wrong Laughing
