This forum is old.
It is glitchy.
It has holes in it, and handles cookies poorly.
It smells old. Like [sYn]'s old farts and JeanLuc's bad breath.
I think it needs to be reinvigorated.
It needs some sexy jQuery, and some spiffy fluid html.
It needs a new solid logo.
But it needs the same color.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

It is!
To be completely honest I don't feel like a huge upgrade is needed, maybe a lick of paint keeping the old heart and style intact. I'm strangely attached to this vintage layout, and quite aroused by it also. xD

Don't have photoshop at the hands right now, so bear with my crude visio skills
Basic assumptions: Internet 1.0 is long gone, this is also not a collection of pages, so the pages concept is gone. Only posts. You can scroll on the page or use the scroll bar, on the right of the screen, to quickly jump to posts or even use the "jump to" button to enter a post number. Of course the forum would remember the last post you read and would initially take you to that if you clicked on a topic. (You'll have a more button where you can select to jump to the first, last read, last post).
Signatures are currently quite shitty placed but I need to think of data that can be displayed there BUT is also optional, because I don't want to unnecessarily bloat the the height of a post, just because the user has a 10 line sig.
As new features you'll be able to favorite forum sub categories, topics and single posts. You can then look at your favorite posts and in case of new topic creation in sub categories, new posts in favorite topics or edits on single posts, you'll get notifications.
Maybe somewhere on the page we could also have a live update with newly added posts (like the sub cat/topic/user and the first 20 words or so of his post)
Edit: Disregard the small triangles on the mobile image in the top, they are just artifacts from visio.

I'm definitely against the concept of removing pages in place of infinite scrolling. More often than not in case of huge topics with massive post influx before release I just remember "alright, I stopped reading at page 80", and when I see the topic now has 87 pages I can resume reading easily. The infinite scrolling would ruin that, especially since the "go to last unread post" is unreliable when cookies fuck up.

Reddit's mobile version has that annoying shitty feature and I hate it. | Well, I guess then it's up to us to make a better implementation

These were just mobile and tablet layouts, the pc version would be similar to the tablet version, but without the requirement for "more" buttons. Honestly, look at this page and you'll see a hundred links and drop down links for shit you'll never use/never have used.

sabin1981 wrote: | It looks nice Pumpy, but not something I'd enjoy using for the forum. Web 1.0 may be "dead" but why fix what isn't broken? And by that I mean the "layout" and not the backend software | Well, I know it's easier to remember the "page" a post was on, so that is definitely that is better with pages, but there is a big problem -> the last post on pages mostly gets skipped. I saw this so often and I really find it sad that someone spends time writing a post and then it's just buried on the previous page, just because we are using artificial limits and page brakes.
And using this forum from a mobile is really not fun and no, I don't like tapatapatap and I especially don't like how each forum that has tapatap has a popup "why don't you use our super cool app!" and then you download the app and it has artificial limits, just so you have to pay to use super cool functions like "post this without our shitty advertising".
No fuck that

Well that is the blue that came with visio, it might not be the same. What else do you mean with theme? Icons and so on?

I just don't want it looking like some generic forum shite (like the old bethesda forum transition to the new, the awesome papyrus/scroll theme was forever lost )

I'm with KC, seriously, there's nothing wrong with the layout and navigation of the Hump. It works perfectly and the handful of times someone's important post gets "pushed to the previous" page doesn't mean we should be changing every single thing about the site. The "problems" with the site are the ancient software, along with it's foibles and glitches. The layout is, to me, absolutely perfect and one of the very sites I use where I feel completely comfortable with how it looks and feels.

Don't get me wrong tho, I think a lot of people prefer this kind of layout. It's just my personal aversion of making website layouts to conform to tablets. There being no side panel, just a top panel with big buttons irks me. But times are changing so I need to conform to this tablet world.
The page system going away, is kinda annoying for me since I usually use it to navigate myself to older posts, I think with the newer system it's going to be more of a hassle. I can be wrong on that, but to me it seems like it's more made for the scrolling devices (I do however get the why, a lot of people don't bother with last posts on a page).
The most annoying thing however is the user info to the right, I really prefer it to the left and my mind is quite strict on that (like I do with quotes on top and responses under them). On most places I frequent it has always been on the left for all those years so I really don't see a reason to put it on the other side other than: just being different.
It is more sleek, and it was time to get the old out of our forum. It's just sad for me to see one of the last places I frequent from the olden days also going towards tablet/win8 design.
So I really appreciate your work, and a lot of clutter is eliminated. Guess I got a bit emotional With time I'll most likely get used of it, I still rather have user info to the right tho. Having it to the left will just bug me forever.
Edit: and apologies for my first response. Was my initial reaction to change, which was maybe a bit too emotional.

The phone layout has to change. It is impossible to properly navigate this site on a phone without zooming in.
On the other hand, why is a tablet version needed? Tablets are large enough to have the desktop site version and still be fully operational.
There are some elements I like and some I dislike in the Pumpy mobile shot above. Layout can be changed later. But the agreement on a mobile version is what matters.

What can't be changed is admins not doing any work on the site, having left it mostly for dead. This entire thread, and others like it, is an exercise in futility while admins do nothing. People get excited, angry, whatever useless emotion, but nothing happens because nobody with the power to actually make it so is willing to do anything.
They are not getting paid? Fine, I am willing to accept that, so add other people with access to the source so they can work. Clearly there are people here willing to put in the effort. But no, mrt teases here for a weak that "a change is coming", even forks some GitLab shit, then disappears for months. If you are not willing to do any minimal work, then don't tease.

Yeah, just because I'm a mod don't assume that I have any power over anything on the page. I just did this in my spare time 2/3 hours and didn't talk or coordinate this with anyone, so no, your most beloved place on the internet most likely won't change anytime soon and probably to not what I just clicked here together in Visio.
So once again: THIS IS NOTHING OFFICIAL, JUST PUMPY PLAYING AROUND

I also had it on the left, but then the "more" options for the thread remained on the right because I couldn't put it to the left as there is the nfo logo, which holds all general options, like login/logout/go to profile/search and so on.
Really, I am open for suggestions, just open mspaint, and put some boxes and pointers in there
---
Edit: Regarding pages -> Our system is not really suited for a lot of pages anyway. I always calculate the number and modify the number in the http address, because you only see the first 3 pages, then ... and then the last three. At least jumping to a page should be implemented.
Hmm.. In my first layout I had a hybrid page/infinite scroll implementation (It adds virtual lines seperating pages in there and scrolling with the right button will also show you the page you are scrolling to

too used to the forum the way it is, the only very obvious change is that it used to be a straight blue and now its a gradient.
why not make it pink?
