Yes that's right. It's everyone's favourite time of the year. Not-so-belle-mere has arrived. Will I be patient enough to get through these difficult times? Or will I lose it and get into arguments like usual? Time will tell. Send help. |
It depends on how much you drink.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Just do what we do have a christmas at home.
We dont go see family, or travel an hour+ to sit with 80% of people we barely know other than from doing that very thing every year.
Christmas at our house is easy: Throw up a cheap fold out tree if we feel like it (kids are old enough its just if we are in the mood to have one), wake up..whenever christmas day, exchange gifts between the 4 of us, and cook a small christmas dinner to eat, and whatever the hell we feel like the rest of the day.
I've always had the mindset if my family wants to frown at me for not coming to some arbitrary holiday get together and gossip about how/why I am not there. Those particular people are not the type I want to be around on holidays to start with. Self solving problem
But then again I don't see family (extended random family) as anything special. Why does if we have people in common that slept with each other mean I have to give them more concession than anyone else? I have to hang out with people I don't like simply because they have a line of people that bumped uglies in common with me?

@Nalo
Same here, we celebrate it more as a tradition than anything actually related to holiday itself. More a december 'theme' than anything to do with religion.
We are not the religious type, wife is kinda religious in the loosest sense: She was raised in it and now doesn't believe in it, but childhood moldings of some superstitions(?) are hard to shake. Best way I can phase it how she sees it is that word. She knows it's odd, but can't shake some vague back of mind dogmatic inklings that linger. I have never been at all, but was raised with Christmas as a thing my family did since they was religious.
My kids aren't either. But I never stopped them if they wanted to try to be. They even went to different churches a few times with friends over the years..but none of it grabbed them as something they wanted.
So last 10 years or so since kids was early teenagers and up we stopped going to family holidays. Its just us and the kids. And they are long past santa age (21 and 25) we did have a good run of them believing in him.
Only reason we did before was for the kids to see the people they wanted to on christmas being kids and all and to play with the cousins they liked but saw 2-3 times a year, and people that wanted to cheek pinch them and talk about how great it is to be with family and see the kids. Despite never hearing from then the rest of the year, since they was extended family..you know hollow tokenism of "Big Tribe...is big strong".

What the hell is sheep slaughtering day? Easter for psychos? |
There is a holiday where every family buys a sheep, slit its throat, behead then skin it. Fun for the whole family and great reliable yearly income if you're selling sheep.
