what do you use?

I used the built in windows 10 ones, called Photos or whatever. Serves my needs, just press left, right to compare images etc. This function has stopped working (doesn't take left/right any more) so im looking for something else.

I tried irfanview, and i remember why i don't use it, because when you're using left right you eventually go out of browing and into some menu, which is very annoying, i want it to just be a round-robin.

Anything good and free out there? wouldn't mind the functionality of having a zoomed in image and that it stays that way for the next image too, would be nice for looking for artifacts.

I use Windows photo viewer, same as in Windows 7.
Works just fine for me with left/right

on Windows no. I''ve tried finding one several times over the years and still stuck on Irfanview, which is great sans the GUI from 1992.

left and right does not do that unless you reach end of all files in a folder? and you can disable that context menu in settings > browsing/editing > "If end/begin of folder is reached during browsing" > select "Loop current folder" or "Do Nothing".

I use ImageGlass, so far best one I like. I dont do any major image manipulation, just viewing for tons of files I generate to delete the ones i do not want.
Quick and lightweight it seems for what it does.

cool, good with more options.

i noticed that Faststone imageviewer had a way to turn off "smoothing" some filter that is turned on to make images look better.. i wonder if that's the norm and how often you can even turn that shit off, for me that stuff is cancer, i must be able to see exactly how the image (texture) looks, not with some filter.

Same!
Will check out faststone imageviewer, cannot hurt to have a few options depending on my need at the time

for years ive been using faststone image browser. highly customizable (all dark mode with gray subtitles, thumb sizes and so on) also has pretty great and simlle/quick photomanipulation stuff - basic adjustments, rotations, cropping, BATCH option for mass manipulation of x jpgs, great for quickly compressing thousands of jpgs without using photoshop (also its quicker and easier than PS)

what do you mean about that smoothing filter?

No idea what it does exactly or how its improving the images, it just had some option to turn it off.. which obviously for me is something i want, im not looking for pictures (e.g when viewing textures) to be "pretty". same as when i make music, i don't want it to sound good, i want it to sound accurate via my studio speakers.

Regarding IrfanView, there's an option in Options -> Browsing called "Loop current folder" which does what you want.

The old Windows Photo Viewer was the fastest and easiest to use for me (no bloat or bullshit). That's not the same as Windows 10+ Photos app. With Windows 10, it is still there in the system, and you can change all your images to open with it, instead of the new garbage. No idea if it still works in Windows 11.
