What is the downside to paying €3.50 for a Windows 11 key?

I've done this a few times now by googling 'Windows 11 Pro key' and I'll get a list of sites offering it for a few dollars.

What are these keys, and why do they work if they're so cheap?

Then I see sites like DSOgaming promoting Windows keys on some other dodgy affiliate site for maybe ~$30, which I suppose is also cheap, but what's the difference here? I feel like it has been about 2 years since I first started doing this.

The reason I started was because I upgraded a GPU way back when and the legit activation key stopped working. They wanted $339 as it no longer recognised my hardware. Screw that.

It's been a while, but the last time I got one, I had to activate it over the (automated) phone line.

I don't know if that still holds true.

There is a higher chance that those cheaper keys get blocked from Microsoft. If you get one of those you would want to activate it with phone activation, so even if it gets blocked your activation will still be valid until you format your PC.

Both the 3 and 30 dollar key probably come from the same weird source, but the 30 dollar key probably won't get sold that much and so it won't get activated as often. This would mean a lower chance to get blocked by Microsoft.

I see no point in buying a key for 3 or 30 euro if a tool gives you a permanent activation, without the need to run any kms tools in the background or so. Its just as legit as the 3 or 30 Euro key.

Why give 3 dollars to scammers that steal from Microsoft instead of stealing from microsoft directly? Just install autokms and be happy xD

Would there be any downside to upgrading to Win11 from a +3 year Win10 installation compared to installing from scratch?

just like in the past yes there can be problems, but it can also run just fine.
try it if you want to, but i would do a fresh install. it may take a little bit longer but at least you know there is nothing wrong on your end then. fixing a weird problem afterwards may cost you more time.

Ok, thanks. Normally I do fresh installs but this time around I feel I can't be bothered to go through all the process of OS install + apps install + games install etc Laughing

Than again, I don't have any urgency to upgrade.

I guess the real downside is that you'd be running Win11 instead of Win10.

do yourself a favor and just use a kms activator instead of throwing a few bucks away. those keys are no valid licences and can get deactivated at any time. a real windows license costs you about 120 bucks

doenst make a difference if you buy an obvious non legal key or activate it non legal, besides the fact that you dont throw money to shady guys

i have a valid licences from win 7 and 8 still running w10/w11 fine after a few upgrades of the machines
