|
 |
Edit: Changed topic to see above. I want to make the thread broader.
I have some new experiences.
I currently have the original Chromecast device. I often use it to cast streams (Twitch, Eurosport, F1.tv, etc.) from my smartphone to my PC monitor, that I basically use as TV (poormans setup).
Thing is with the original Chromecast there is no way of tweaking resolution and fps. It will just upscale to the max setting of the monitor (4k at 60 fps). Undesirable IMO, I want a 1080p stream with 25 fps to play with original resolution and with 25 or 50 fps (monitor can handle it), just to save some power consumption.
LOL, I guess this is a white man's problem.
Anyway after some reading CC 4k better picture and audio I belief? And FS 4k Max has better (edit: and more) apps?
Edit: Audio: 2.0 speakers, 10 W RMS, enough to annoy my neighbours. Audio quality is not a real issue here.
Edot2: I also have a mediabox that can perfectly adapt to the source, like for example playing a primevideo movie at 4k and 24 fps. I am kinda puzzled here about the 24 fps (source bluray?). I thought DVD for PAL sped the movie frame rate up to 25? The mediabox doesn't have a lot of app support unfortunately.

If you want a one and done get the shield. I bought mine in 17 and it’s been amazing and still getting updates. Def get the new one as they added some neat ai features and it just supports everything.
Runs android tv. Plenty of ways to easily side load apps. I use it for Plex, iptv and steam link. Got an adfree hacked YouTube app that took like 5 minutes to install.
It’s pricey but it’s awesome. After I got mine friends and family ditched their chromes and first stop, roku whatever because it just works with no bullshit

@SpykeZ Does it allow preserving framerate and content type (e.g., pay 24fps HDR content in 24hz HDR, while 60fps 720p in 60hz 720p SDR)?

maybe i understand wrong but CCGTV does automatic frame rate matching since android 12 upgrade
the api is enabled it's just that commercial apps didnt use it in the past. Kodi did/does though.
so if you're fine with using Kodi then i can recommend the device. so far it has played everything i have thrown at it including high bitrate 4k DV x265 content.
downsides are small memory and storage and no usb (w/o additional hardware)

Bought 2x CCwGTV a while ago, they work fine, although they're not what you call fast. The remote, however, is absolute garbage. It's the flimsiest of the flimsiest thing with unlogical control placement, so make sure your TV supports CEC so you can use TV remote. I'm now using a Google TV box from ISP, which obviously isn't free, but has a decent remote and feels at least 10x faster than the CCwGTV.
PC: Yes. Console: No.

Chromecast works fine here, except for the screensaver. Every 5 minutes the screensaver activates, showing pictures of an unknown Dutch family. Pretty sure they are Dutch. There is a picture with mum and dad with the Dutch flag painted on their cheeks. And there is one picture with the Rotterdam Willemsbrug in the background. There is a also a picture with a naked toddler on the beach. Google, really?
To change the screensaver I need a code that was printed on the original packaging, that is the 1st thing I toss. Okay I bought the Firestick 4k Max, audio and video are clearly worse. Meanwhile I gave the Chromecast a factory reset, so I can dump it later as a small electronic garbage at the local shopping mall. Than I decided the audio and video of the Firestick are too worse, so I hooked up the Chromecast again, and guess what? The screensaver got changed to Google nature pictures and such.
Still deciding if I should be happy or angry.

Planning on getting the Fire Cube Gen 3 when Prime days hit, afaik they added DTS:X support recently so it should be able to do anything now.
I also see Apple TV recommended quite often. Nvidia Shield was great when it came out but now appears to be abandoned.

I just started really getting into collecting 4K digital movies and for the most part, AppleTV seems to be a must just because many of the films that have iTunes Extras like the alternate versions of the film as a free bonus will only play on a real Apple device. I am hoping to see a deal on one soon but do kind of want to wait till the next version comes out since there were rumors and many thought it was going to be announced at the Apple Conference a few weeks ago so it probably is not far off.

Interesting they have so many extras. But I guess you have to pay for these movies anyway.
But when watching mainly pirated movies (with an atmos soundbar that supports all audio formats), you think it's better to go for Apple TV or Fire Cube?

The way Apple does their iTunes Extras on the movies is nice if you can actually view them. I just picked up the 4K Apocalypse Now Final Cut and it has the Theatrical and Redux versions as iTunes Extras along with a lot of documentaries and interviews.
I have not really looked into the ability to play my own mkv stuff on the Firestick 4K I currently have or the FireTV apps on my TV. I just have found some of the various different digital code selling groups on reddit, facebook and the blu-ray.com forums where people are selling their 4K codes from the 4K UHD movie purchases cheap, so I am getting a lot of these 4K movies for $1-$4 each film.
When I only had the Firestick 4K, I was planning to get the Firecube since it is the best Amazon streaming device plus it has the ability to be wired if you wifi is not the best. But since I got my TV that has all the FireTV stuff built in, I have now been looking into the AppleTV device just for all the iTunes Extras on these films I am buying. In general, if you are streaming digital movies most say AppleTV or MoviesAnywhere apps seem to have the best bit rate with Vudu being much lower so that was why I decided to make iTunes my main platform for my movie collection.

It's funny how the official Google site compares the new Streamer device with the Chromecast one and NOT the CCWGTV 4K version
There should be a comparison between the original CCWGTV 4K and the Streamer one to see the real differences. Ethernet on the Streamer one could help a lot regarding streaming speeds instead of wireless
We have a CCWGTV 4K device and as for late sometimes it goes sluggish/lagging, takes seconds to load an option and sometimes streaming takes a while (Even with WiFi 6)
I've been searching but there's no "specific" info on specs related to our 4K anymore (i think it had 2GB of RAM and 8GB HDD?), only the HD one seems to be shown. Heck, even the official Google site has a comparison but it supposedly shows the HD version and NOT the 4K one
I have a few questions:
-How faster and improved is the Streamer over the 4K one, CPU sense?
-What's the real RAM and HDD comparison between 4K and Streamer?
-We have many accounts in the 4K (NETFLIX, APV, etc) and in case we decide to change to Streamer, is there a way to unlink the accounts from the device and move the accounts onto the new one, preventing stuff like NETFLIX saying "Oh, you're using more than X devices, now you're screwed LOL" ?
-Would using kinda premium wireless headsets (SONY, JBL, etc) work correctly without delays/lag (aka correct lipsync )?
-I see it has a USB C port. Is it ok to buy a USB A TO C cable and it'll still work?. Also, how do you connect an external HDD if there's only one Type C port wich's the AC port?...
-Supported USB formats?
-As for the USB Port... Can you connect a hard drive to it with a movie in MKV format and play it via VLC?. If so, is the device capable of opening ALL OF THE ACTUAL VIDEO/AUDIO CODEC FORMATS? ( h264, x265, etc.. Then EAC, AC, etc in all of it's versions)
-Anything else we should know?. Would it be worth it/beneficial the upgrade?
Thanks in advance!

Do they still need iTunes to talk to devices within the Apple ecosystems, and Windows machines need iTools to talk to Apple systems? Do they still have limited support for formats/codecs for media files? At least, that's how I remember it from 8 years ago, when I had to deal with moving a dozen of downloaded movies onto an iPad.
