From disappointment in JA3 I started playing this mod https://github.com/SolariusScorch/XComFiles for the original X-Com and would have to say I don't think someone can make a better game. The mod contains essentially the original game but wrapped in a prequel that goes to massively expanded Original Endgame.
Expanded lore.
Massively expanded tech tree.
Engine improvements brought on from the OpenXcom Expanded engine.
Expanded items across the board
Expanded enemy types, friendly combatants, expanded aliens and tech.
Human factions etc.
Overhauled accuracy and ballistics system.
You start a few years prior to original XCom and are tasked with investigating and building the X-Com agency. Once you reach that stage your into mid-game fending off the alien invasion. It all feels right and fits with the original X-Com theme. The mod author is the same guy that made "The Final Mod" except this is just his creativity gone wild. I don't think you can improve the gameplay of this game for squad based TBS, all you can do is make it in modern 3D which no developer is willing to do so this is the best TBS we will get.
Sounds cool. I guess Im not smart enough to install it :/
