Men, the first 4k Blurays are appearing (Kingsman)...

Where is the scene on this? Are there standards yet? When can I merrily set my crawlers to look for Kingsman 2160p ATMOS and leech away?

And when my RAID is bursting full and the kinks and issues of first-gen UHD Monitors are worked out and HDR is properly implemented I can go out and buy a sweet sweet UHD Monitor and rewatch everything in 4k. Or are there great recommendations already? Anyone already on the 4k bandwagon?

No standards, even the official ones aren't even quite there yet, but there has been some progress.
Gonna need 10-bit, wide gamut, HDR hardware to make full use of these.
As usual, everyone is totally behind again. This is going to be a 3-4 year long transition phase.
Still can't get 10-bit output from consumer Nvidia cards I believe
Quantum dot TV's been there for over a year, only this year they will finally cover DCI-P3. But only the most expensive ones Laughing
Monitors? Philips announced one last year, it never saw the light of day. Reaction
Oh yeah and the HDR thing, if not on OLED, requires full array backlight to work properly.
Kinda dumb when 99% of all displays are still cheaply edge-lit.
Oh man that's going to take years to get this going. And every little step here will be sold to use as a great leap and will require new hardware.

Is there any drive for PC that can play the new discs? No? Then you'll have to wait until then for someone to rip them.

For most TV situations at home, I believe 4K is complete overkill already. Most people I know could not even hope to see all 1080p detail even...

I meant that with 8k, the human eye (apparently) isn't able to distinguish the pixels anymore. Not sure if real, just something I heard somewhere.

After a certain distance, the eye can't distinguish the pixels even in 320x240. He distance from and size of screen Is what matters. A huge projection system will benefit from 4-8K, while 32-48" cheap flat LCDs will not. In fact, since 1080p panels are more researched, you'd have a better experience overall with a 1080p panel for now.

Yeah, it got of topic pretty quickly eh?

Still, I'll try to keep it updated occassionally if something in the scene develops.

Also, if someone has knowledge about 4k displays/projectors, what these new HDR requirements entail, and where we stand on 10-bit output (thanks Stormtrooper for bringing that up) I'd be very thankful. (bxrdj?)

A quick read up on Dolby ATMOS and DTS:X shows that one will definitely need a new audio receiver and for ATMOS either ceiling-mounted speakers, or a upwards-firing speaker which bounces sound waves off the ceiling towards the listener. (the misses does not like the prospect of ceiling mounted speakers at all Very Happy)

On the HDR topic, I know that there is not one but several standards at the moment and that some companies (e.g. LG) officially support a subset. I do not know if this will become an issue for current devices.

I dont even know if I like HDR. I'd love 10bit sources, but of the insane peak brightness im not convinced yet.

Is x265 ready for piracy? Last time I checked it failed to preserve details and 64x64 blocks were broken.

To create super small encodes without blocking? Sure..

To preserve as much details as x264 can and keep size considerably smaller than x264? No.

Imho atm x264 10bit is da best choice encoding wise...

Seems casual/mainstream piracy will continue to be fine, but high end might be off limits. I'm ok with this, for now. Ask me again after I get 4K equipment in 10 years Laughing

The video is certainly better, but it's not an efficient way of making encodes because they need to capture the movie first to lossless/near lossless, and the HDR is also discarded, which is like half of the benefits that the 4K format brings. We need true cracking!

The Legend of Tarzan (2016) 2160p 4K UltraHD Capture (x265 HEVC 10bit) 2CH AAC

The Legend of Tarzan (2016) 2160p 4K UltraHD TC/CAM Cool Face (x265 HEVC 10bit) 2CH AAC

Anyway I guess it's just matter of time untill we see proper 4K releases with HDR

There may be releases, but I still don't think there are proper scene standards yet.

I only found some minor mentions of the 2160p tag for webrips THE.2016.WEB.AND.WEBRIP.SD.HD.X264.RULESET.v1.0-WDX264, however the scenes latest High Definition Standards Document I found was version 4.0 from 2011 (High.Definition.x264.Standards.Revision.4.0.UPDATE-HDX) and that doesn't mention anything about 2160p or HDR yet.

And before there isn't any scene standard I won't buy a HDR 4k TV Very Happy
