Star Trek: Discovery is an upcoming American television series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, due to premiere in January 2017. It is the first series produced specifically for that service, and the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Set 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek series, separate from the timeline of the concurrent feature films, Discovery explores a previously mentioned event from the history of Star Trek while following the crew of the USS Discovery. Fuller serves as showrunner on the series.
The new series was announced in November 2015, with Fuller joining the next February. In addition to Fuller and Kurtzman, who wrote for previous Star Trek series and films, respectively, the crew includes previous Star Trek creative Nicholas Meyer as consuting producer, and Star Trek-creator Gene Roddenberry's son Rod as executive producer. The production put emphasis on carrying on the legacy of the previous series, including making efforts to feature a diverse cast, and taking inspiration from original designs by Ralph McQuarrie.
Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere on CBS in January 2017, before moving to All Access, and will consist of 13 episodes.

After announcing that its new subscription streaming service's flagship show, Star Trek: Discovery, would launch in January 2017, CBS has pushed that show's release back to May 2017.
So it's in the reboot universe, I take it. Well, good. It's better to keep the classic timeline as it is, they can mess around with the new one to their hearts' content.

Why would you take it like that? CBS doesn't have the rights to JJ alternate universe Trek, they have the rights for prime universe.
There is only one timeline. Anything related to the reboot is idiots in space trying to parody something they dont understand.
Just do new Space scifi shows and let Star Trek be what it was. The second try in reboot was such a travesty I can never accept that crap beeing start trek, no matter how cheesy that was sometimes.
Star Trek is an idea. But like anything modern the transgression of the idea is the popular thing to do. What they dont realize is that by transgressing they effectively kill the reason why that idea worked to begin with and slowly kill the thing they feed on until there is nothing left to exploit and it just dies.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Boo to the pessimists - I for one am super excited. Really hope its in the "old" universe though, would love to see cameos etc.
Love Star Trek!
... but... but, that's what the "pessimism" is about, silly! We're SUPER EXCITED but we want it in the proper universe and timeline, not the JJ universe
I'm happy to hear we'll get something in ze trekkie world. Don't know if I'll be happy when I see what they came up with in this day and age... but eh.
Liked all the shows except for Deep space 9. I tried numerous times but I just hate the damn thing.

To be honest, Enterprise could nearly have been in the JJ universe given it didn't really "interact much with the "proper universe"
So this takes place after Voyager when Dilithium Crystals are in such desperate demand + started screwing up the galaxy with environmental problems as in the recently released ST: Renegades? Tings could get real, Star B*tches!

For me, its about whether the show will be proper "geek" like the others have been. And not like the JJ movies which are alright, but in my mind will never be ST.
"Hannibal" creator and writer Bryan Fuller signed up as the showrunner of this.
He has extensive experience writing Star Trek, having written 2 episodes for DS9 and more importantly having either provided the story or written the script for 22 episodes of Voyager.

Goddamn it. First thing's first... the new series isn't set in the JJ-universe, it's going to be set in the Prime universe. That's the good news. Bad news (for me! IMOOOO!!) is that it's another friggin' prequel, set after the end of TOS and before the start of TNG.
Sigh. Sigh. Siiiiiiiigh.
They are hinting that each season may change timelines, so there's a *chance* we'll see a VOY/DS9 successor, but meh... I doubt it.
Seriously that period is just too unexplored and it leaves alot of room for building up connections between the two. Sadly the cameos are literally dying away. And so glad they evaded Craptrek.

I guess I'm just tired of going back, it's too restrictive since you can't fuck with the past canon -- or future canon in the terms of prequels. I want to return to the worlds we have already established and have new stories that build on stories we know and have seen.
I understand. I suppose I was just so glad I to have more stuff going on in the original Trek verse that I'd take almost anything. On the other hand, I really do like the style of the TOS movies and the more practical approach of that time. One season of that cant hurt I think.

Damn it, I hate interquels just because of the reasons Sabine mentioned.
But atleast it isn't set in the JJ-abominationverse
