Peter Jackson Working on New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Films for Warner Bros., Targeting 2026 Debut
Warner Bros. has made it official: It will be returning to Middle-earth.
On Warner Bros. Discovery’s first-quarter earnings conference call on Thursday, CEO David Zaslav said that the company is “now in the early stages of script development” for new Lord of the Rings movies, which he says they “anticipate releasing in 2026” and will “explore storylines yet to be told.”
The first film, which will center on the character of Gollum, has Andy Serkis set to star and direct.

Gollum is a pretty annoying character, especially so in the movies. Maybe not Jar-Jar Binks bad but i wasn't fan and not a fan of Serkis at all to be honest. I'm still hyped for more LOTR though.
After clumsily trying to cater to a different audience with the failed not-so-amazon Power Ringers, the idea now is to target kids whilst luring their foolish fan-fathers and exposing them to another potential disappointment
I guess this whole thing was greenlit when Warner and Jackson realized just how much Amazon fucked up with Rings of Power. I'm not sure about Gollum getting his own movie but we'll have to wait and see. I wonder what else will come later.

The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is an upcoming live-action film currently in development, announced on March 25, 2026, as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations for The Fellowship of the Ring. The project is a collaboration between Warner Bros. and WingNut Films, featuring Stephen Colbert (co-writing with his son Peter McGee and original screenwriter Philippa Boyens) and produced by Peter Jackson.
The movie is set 14 years after the passing of Frodo and serves as a sequel to the original trilogy, while also adapting Chapters III through VIII of The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from Peter Jackson's 2001 film. The plot follows Samwise, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the first steps of their adventure, while Elanor Gamgee (Sam's daughter) uncovers a "long-buried secret" explaining why the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it began.
Key story elements and characters expected to be featured include:
Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, who were cut from the original trilogy but appear in the source material chapters being adapted.

Since they only have the rights to The Hobbit & LotR they're just desperately grabbing any straws they can to create their own nonsense with. In this case they're taking the name "The Shadow of the Past" from the first book in the LotR trilogy which is mostly the beginning of the first movie. Taking unused material from The Hobbit + LotR and placing it in the 4th Era, using it to make a movie named LotR - The Shadow of the Past.. that's .
