I still hope we can get one really solid Harry Potter game, I wouldn't mind it at all
It's funny since I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books right now and I remember the kiddy games we had at the time and, well, they weren't terrible as far as kiddy games go but they left a lot to be desired. A proper Witcher-style RPG game would be amazing and the lore lends itself to it. Setting it so much earlier seems like a mistake, though. I'd have loved it to be set in the time when Voldemort was active like the 1970s.

Agreed, it's an odd choice since such a time period would attract the masses more.. perhaps they want to create their own lore or something.
( and I'm not fluent enough in Harry Potter to know whether there are characters/events that took place during that time period )

Me neither. The books actually talk very very little about the Voldemort period. You get snippets but the timeline makes little sense. According to Goblet of Fire, Voldemort is around 70 years old but Harry's parents died when he was a baby so 10-12 years before that. Apparently Voldemort had "reigned" for quite some time but very little is known about this. I always felt the books glossed over this period - like why muggles knew nothing about a violent madman who used magic to kill people. Why would Voldemort take care not to be seen? That's why I would want it to be set during that period, so it could solve the tons of questions that arise from the books.

have confirmed to Eurogamer that the project (Harry Potter) is indeed real and currently in development.
The game is developed by Avalanche Software. Harry Potter is an AAA RPG.
Before the release of the game there is less than 1 year.
...
The BBC added that at the moment the game is called Harry Potter: Magic Awakened
I honestly don't care much for Harry Potter, but as a kid I really liked the first 3 games if I remember correctly, more than the movies actually, so I am in fact somewhat interested in something like this.

From what I recall, they were very "collect 'm all" in style - collecting cards, beans, etc. Not bad for a kids game but they didn't exactly have a lot of depth and the games felt very childish - like a very simplistic version of the movies which were already a simpler version of the books.
Was kinda hoping it might have an arx fatalis style of casting magic, but from the looks of it, no such luck
That would be great ! - but yeah, doesn't seem to be the case.
Even the first child games had a sort of Arx Fatalis style of casting magic for learning the spells, not for using them though, unfortunately.
I mean, like my comment earlier I'll hold my breath. You can see in the video you have "three" spells to select from during combat. And so far it looks like a hallway. I hope I am wrong.
PC Specs: A Maganavox' Odyssey
Tweaked to play Frogger, Lemmings & GTA4
Chronologically, the game takes place after the events of the book, so you won’t be facing Voldemort, rather a former Death Eater leading a cast of smaller villains. The setting will allow for some cameos, however, according to the leaker. The world has a hub-based structure, and each major area is said to contain its own NPCs, quests and the like. Hogwarts, Hogsmead, and The Ministry are three of the four included.
That's strange, the earlier leaks talked about the game set way, way before the time period of the books. The leaked video supported this as the clothing style looked to be from the 1800s.
I liked playing old HP games. Wouldn't mind seeing another HP game.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
That's focus testing. The average slob is not going to be interested in a game set two centuries before Harry or they themselves were born. They want the familiar and relatable. And in a licensed game like this, they definitely want familiar characters from the books/movies.

Why not both modern day and past? It's a magic school, time travel is probably every day shenanigans.
