What's the latest word on the street with harddrive r/w speeds? I'm seeing some sites listing "7200 rpm" is that the latest and greatest for ATA?

Get a 7200 but bigger the cache memory the better

Yep.
The latest SATA drives on the other hand have up to 10000 rpm.
