can someone explain why the 8 countries are there and why others are not there?? it cant be based on GDP etc.. cause for example india has a bigger GDP than germany/uk/france/italy/russia/canada.. and china has a bigger economy than all of them except the usa.. and it cant be based on gdp per capita either.. because there are about 30 countries ahead of italy in that respect...

so just curious as to how it works Smile

There is no real criteria for the G7/G8's membership. In their opening statement the G7 said that the 7 most developed nations have come together to form the G7. Later on the G7 decided that russia can join too, and therefor they are now called the G8

The Group of Eight (G8 ) is the coalition of eight of the world's leading industrialized nations: France, Germany (West Germany to 1990), Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, (the G6, 1975), Canada (the G7, 1976), and Russia (not participating in all events), as well as the European Union. The hallmark of the G8 is an annual economic and political summit (G8 Summit) of the heads of government with international officials, though there are numerous subsidiary meetings and policy research.

Militarily yes, they're probably on a par with the US. But in many other aspects they're still far behind the G8 countries.

maybe today, but in the seventies china wasn't one of the most developed countries. The G8 is more like a club, they decide who can join.

China has been one of the world's super powers throughout history, only a fraction of it has been poverty and whatnot.
