Recently my pc made a nasty burning smell Confused Thought it was the processor (being AMD and quite dusty and all) Shocked *sigh* it was only my graphics card. It still works quite sweetly but when it warms up, 3D textures start clipping all over the screen. Still playable but very off putting.

Anyhow... to the point. I need to get a new graphics card. These are my current specs:

Windows XP v5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1737MHz)
FIC "VIA KT400" AGP Motherboard
512MB
RADEON 9500 PRO 128MB (sizzled) Crying or Very sad

Gonna get another 512mb as well. For the card, I don't wanna pay more than £200. Preferably looking at around £150. I have no knowledge of the market right now and any advice would be gladly welcomed Smile

I would wait till the X800 comes down in price to around £150 it shouldnt be too long now. If you wanted one NOW you would just be wasting money on a card that isnt a massive improvement on what you have now..

if you DO want something now, go with a 9800 Pro, for about £70.. it will do the job Smile. I would also suggest getting a CPU upgrade (maybe to a 3000 if your mobo supports it..) but RAM and GFX card are more important right now!

Thx SYN. I'll give it a few weeks then take a look at the X800's then.

P.S.
Found this:

Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 128MB DDR3, PCI-E, DVI, TV Out, Retail

£142.06 inc. VAT

Or the XL - AGP version
Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 XL 256MB DDR3, 8xAGP, DVI, TV Out Retail
£222.19 inc. VAT (PCI-E version = £205.04 inc VAT)

How comes PCI-E is cheaper and is the 256MB version card alot different? thx again

Cobb you can only buy AGP cards for your board. The ATI PCIe are cheaper because allmost all ATI GPU's are native PCIe, the AGP versions need a bridge. I would get the X800XL card, i bought one myself a few weeks back and it is much faster than my old one (wich also happned to be a Radeon 9500Pro, or i can sell you my 9500Pro for cheap Smile )

Cheers. I'm very tempted to buy your 9500pro but I think maybe its time for a change.
Glad to hear that there's a noticeable difference between 9500pro & X800XL from someone who's owned both.
My mind is now set on the X800XL. While I wait for the potential price drop, I'll sort out a new processor & mobo.

Cheers for the advice all! Smile

If you're not planning on upgrading the AthlonXP 2100+ anytime soon, a GeForce6600 GT (€180) would suit you better. That card also supports pixel shader 3, unlike the X800 XL. The X800 XL does offer more performance, but you'll need a faster CPU (Athlon64 3000) as well.

Since battlefield 2 requires pixelshader 1.4 i'm pretty fucked because I have a Ti4200. I'm looking for a new card now and the battle was between the 6600GT and the x800. After reading some reviews I think the x800 will be the winner. But I'll wait a couple of weeks, I want to spend about 200 euro's and the x800's are coming close now! Do you think my choice is the right one?
