|
 |
Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should buy a PSP or not, I did a lot thinking and I really can't take a decision. I'm living in Europe so right now the only solution is to buy imported PSP, meaning they are more expensive of course. Money is not really a problem for me, I already have a PS2, Xbox and Gamecube but at the end of the day with work, wife, friends and family I don't have that much time to play video games.
I travel quite a lot so it could be useful to have one and to play on the plain but most of the time I have to work during flights. I've seen it has been hacked and now you can have access to msn and even IRC which is really nice as I have wi-fi installed in my home, so my wife will stop complaining about me checking every 30min my pm on the IRC when watching a movie. I also heard that batteries are quite limited just a few hours (is that true?).
I went to a shop to check it and I have to say it looks really nice, screen quality is amazing and I really like the idea of the UMD DVDs…but there is not a lot of games right now so what should I do buy one, wait until it's available in Europe or just keep my money??
Thanks for any advice

Your kind of wrong. Online play is locked within the countries the game was made for. So I can play a Jap game with anyone else who has a Jap game, no matter where the PSP is from. But I can't play a Jap game with someone who has a US copy of the same game!
This is the only restriction on the PSP, other than region protection for UMD movies (but as Jap and Europe are the same thats not an issue either ).
As far as it being "hacked" thats only if you have a v1.0 PSP like I do, to get one of those you had to buy within the first few weeks of release, now its impossible to get your hands on one, so I wouldn't use that as a reason to buy. The PSP will be hacked fully, but its a matter of time and effort, right now there are a huge number of talented developers trying to get this really going, but I feel it is not enough, only time will tell.

I baught one like a month ago, and i've hardly used it. Games are better on other hardware, easy as that! I figured i use it to watch movies while flying and stuff but i dunno.

Yeah I guess you are right, just a matter of time
But what I really don't get is if some guy can hack it to browse the internet it means that this feature is available (just speaking about hardware here), so why did they decide not to include it ??
Ok I'm working in marketing so I guess they don't want to confuse the customers, they want them to understand this IS a gaming console not some kind of PDA, but hey a game console which can browse the internet that the kind of stuff that would make me buy one.
+ the guys are not that stupid, they knew that somehow it would be hacked, so I really don't get why they are not offering some kind of pack (like dvd pack for the xbox) like 30-40$ with a small keyboard and patch that would allow to go on the internet, it would be extra money for them + they would have a whole new range of customers…
Any comments?

The PSP is region free on games and region 2 on DVD's (Same as the UK).
And yes to the question in the previous post....
btw moving |
I've seen lotsa posts on this subject on more console centric sites, and what it comes down to is that this was a myth, as people who own both versions can attest to the fact that there is absolutely no difference in the quality of the screens.
Anyways, about buying a PSP. For games, dont do it...the game line-up is pathetic, and the system is not worth right now if thats your main use of it.
I use it to watch fansubbed anime, and it is lovely for this, the same could be said to watch movies on the go or TV shows, but you must buy at the VERY least a 512 memory card. I got mine from Best Buy for $63 + $10 rebate (sandisk 512), but that was a special deal and I'm not sure if they still offer it. For movies you are going to need a 1gig stick to keep them in great quality, otherwise they are not going to look too good. Of course this all depends on the size, but if you want to retain 100% quality the file size will drop about 10-20%, so a 700meg movie will not fit on a 512 stick in full quality.
You have to invest well over $300 to make your PSP complete, as your going to need a protection screen to place over your PSP screen, it gets hairline scratches VERY easily. All told I've put $340 into my PSP, and I dont own one game for it. I cant say its worth it right now, but seeing as how the majority of the cash has been spent, now I look at it as a future investment that will pay off with time.
Oh BTW, you also need to purchase a USB cable that converts to the small input the PSP needs, they dont give this to you in the value pack, and they cost like $10.
Its one of these:

U should buy a PSP in end of august / september when there'll be some good releases as GTA etc. Now there aren't much super games. They're good enough but not so great as those that will appear. I have two PSPs (one for me and for my wife) and all the games currently available but I finished just one - Untold Legends (awesome diablo-like hack'n'slash) - and now we just play NFSU sometimes :) As to video playback - well, u'll need a fat MemoryStick to fit a 2-hrs feature film, u know. A PPC currently is more practical if u wannac watch videos.
So wait until autumn and u won't regret it.
p.s. I don't really understand how can u choose between PS3 and PSP - that's different stuff!!
