Very much looking forward to this one, if indeed it is ever released. Downloading demo now, but I hear it's rather buggy.

Welcome to the Age of Decadence combat beta! It's set in the arena district of Maadoran from the full game. You'll get to pit your character's fighting skills against various opponents with the ultimate aim of being crowned the arena champion. Becoming the arena champion will not be easy, or even very likely (just try getting life insurance as a professional gladiator), but we hope you have fun trying. The main purpose of this beta is to test the combat system from the full game and tweak it if necessary based on player feedback, as well as detect any performance or stability issues. Some story elements have been added for your amusement, but they don't represent the scope of options that will be available in the complete game. Bear in mind that everything you'll see is a work in progress (the animations are being improved as I write this). The beta allows you to change the screen resolution, shadows and other settings from within the game (either from main menu, or by pressing ctrl-o at any time), but unfortunately anti-aliasing cannot be turned on from the game. This is a restriction of the game engine being used, and can be easily worked around by simply switching on anti-aliasing in your graphics card settings before starting AoD.
A regular demo featuring the entire first location and the full range of gameplay options (factions, multiple quest solutions, large variety of dialogue options, alchemy, crafting, sneaking, thievery, persuasion, diplomacy, lore, trickery, disguise, forgery, and more) will be available upon the game's release.
Thanks, ElectricOtter |

I've played the demo for one hour and a half and loved every second of it. The combat system is very good, it's an upgraded Fallout 2 turn-based system. There're a lot of possíbilities to customize your character's skills, and a lot of equipments as well. There's even a fishnet to thrown at the enemy.
The decadent Roman-like setting is pretty good too. The graphics and animations are ok, not bad for an indie game.
I can hardly wait to see the NPC interaction, quests and story.

A shame the demo gets so extremely impossible later on. Fighting the 2 barbarians with bow/sword is impossible. I can't even kill one of them before I'm dead, usually I lose half my health on the first turn just from the archer.
However the combat seems fun itself despite maybe not being completely balanced. Looking forward for the full game in 2013

The combat system actually *is* quite balanced. Depending on how you build your character, some battles will be much easier than others. Then when you replay it with a different character, other battles will be more difficult instead. I've been able to complete it with several different builds now.
Did you manage to win the battle trucane?

Yes I understand that but the problem is that it is absolutely impossible unless you built it in a certain way. Another battle which I realize would have been much easier with a ranged weapon is the one vs the trident guy but that one I finally won when I got lucky with the rolls. Either way the 2 barbarians is impossible. I have lots of dodge and light armor (5% dodge pen) yet the archer hit about 80% of his shots and they all do a lot of damage.

Yeah, the battle is really hard with dodge user. As much as shields break when fighting guys with axes, they're a god-send against ranged attackers. What kind of weapon do you use?
I've beaten it twice with dodgers, but it took me quite a few re-loads. For one of them, I focused on the archer first, following him around. The AI pathfinding can be quite good, but if possible, try to move in such a way (when the archer moves away from you) so that the sword guy has to waste AP when moving after you. For the other guy I focused on the sword guy first, but the strategy was similar. Try to keep the sword guy in the path of the archer so you don't get pelted with arrows.
It's a really hard fight, perhaps the hardest in the game with a dodge character. But it's doable with a bit of luck and unless you've spread your skill over a big nr of skills. The key is definitely to specialize the character.

Well I'm using a 1H mace with a buckler. I have put all points into dodge/hammer except for a few points into critical hit. I regret using hammers because if I do get a critical hit I will only launch them away from me which most of the time helps the enemy instead.

Try experimenting with the various hammers and upgrade to better versions if you haven't already. Even though you use a 1 handed hammer, keep in mind that your skill points into the hammer skill also goes towards using 2 handed hammers which do more damage. Most weapons have three "tiers" of types. One light weapon which is fast, one medium and one 2 handed heavy. You're right though that the knockback effect on hammers can occasionally work against you.
It can be risky to use 2 handers, but it can be devastating against your opponent if you get a good counterattack, and criticals can take a lot of damage off as well. Keeping close to the archer can be great, because you have the chance of attacks of opportunity everytime he tries to move away from you, and those can really hurt with 2 handers as well.
After I replayed the demo, I realized that keeping at least one different set of weapons on you for substituting can be a really good also. Going into the invetory and changing gear only costs (as far as I can remember) 2 AP.
As for armor, even though you're using a dodger guy, it can be worth it in some fights to climb into some heavier armour despite that. Stopping the critical hits from the archers for example.

They're a small team, iirc, so the slow progress doesn't surprise me. The fact that they STUCK with the game for so long makes me think they'll also finish it. They're a very persitsent bunch of people.

Other developers are using the engine, so they have definitely done something.

My understanding is that the game is not close to release, but, this is definitely not vaporware. The developers are working on the game and are easily accessible on the official Iron Tower Studio forums and on RPGCODEX and readily dispense screenshots or news of what was done and so on. Also, there has been talk about an interested publisher already, so it might not be an independent self released game. As the for the pace, I know about 4 people on the team and if there are more than they don't tend to write on the aforementioned forums...meaning that 4 guys are trying to make a very ambitious game...so the pace is understandable.
Also, they are not beta testing the demo, they are beta testing the full game imho. It just that the demo will be released only after the beta test...they don't want to ruin it with buggy demo.
You can read the impressions of the beta testers here: http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=63791
