I am pretty sure that Apple wont be able to take the same profit margins on hardware sales, this will allow of a greater sale of OS as getting now a "Mac" only requires you to spend around 130 USD. Now buying a x86 cpu pc allows you to choose between *BSD *Nix Windows and Mac OS. IMO more people will atleast test out the Mac in their own homes. Maybe we will see a mix of dual/tripple boots with *nix, windows and mac : ). Anyways, apple was working on coding for Intel chips for years, preparing for an eventual move if it was needed.
Would be nice if

Apple is offering a developer transition kit for $999 within the next two weeks. The kit will include Intel compilers and a Mac driven by a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 processor.
Apple will sure try to hard dongle their crappy OS to their pc hardware, or they will go bankrupt in no time (who will buy their overprized hardware llike ram cd/dvd-writer etc). This is even more stupid because you can directly compare windows to the apple "pc" (benchmark wise as its the same hardware). Who will pay the premium price apple charges, i mean what do you get for it? A crippled free bsd with some schnick schnack gui. God have i ever mentioned that i really hate apple
This is a fine move from Apple's side. And the fact, that Apple has made the last five versions of OSX for both PowerPC and Intel platforms, is pretty cool I think Apple rulez.
