I loved the first series. It wasn't as professional as the other hit shows like 24, or any other American production you care to mention - but it was very enjoyable and epic. I hated the titilation side of it though, that was there for the adverts.
Can't wait to see the new episode though
Has it improved in any way from the originals or is it just more of the same?

So far, more of the same. To me that's a good thing.
Only problem I have with Battlestar is that they throw in too many filler episodes.
S2ep01 was good, if a tad anti-climactic... but yeah, looking forward to see what happens next week.

This is how Sci-Fi should be... not obvious and crappy like ie. Stargate Atlantis. |

I don't really care what show has what audience, to me it's all about what I like, and I like Battlestar.
About the camera, to me it makes the show more authentic - and that's why I don't like Atlantis (or furthermore, SG-1 (the first 8 seasons more or less) - that show, to me, doesn't feel authentic. The characters feel as if written for a humour-show, stereotype and cliché.
When the "bad guys" start to behave as if they were children, and Jack make comments like: "Your name is Ball?" - sure, it's comical in a sense, but it just doesn't come through as authentic to me.
The thing is, what I see when I look at SG-1, is a bunch of "super heroes", without any abilities. They keep on surviving against insurmountable odds, and this is what makes it all really cheesy to me.
Everything they need is thrown at them at the last minute... when that happens in 9 out of 10 episodes with any tension in it, at least I stop worrying, or sensing the atmosphere of fear. I become disillusioned, and that's all SG-1 / Atlantis does for me ... take away the illusion, and it's all mostly a bunch of moving images without content.
I really liked the show when Daniel died and ascended. Had they NOT brought him back after that, I would've been glad. It felt good that, finally, someone of the SG-1 team died, it made more sense... it seemed "realistic".
---
Take the series "Band of Brothers" for instance, what makes it such a good series (apart for some stereotypical portraits) is that it's really authentic.
Take away the dying, and suffering of the main characters, and let no one out of the 101:st be wounded or die, and that series become what I feel is bad about most american shows that involve situation where Life&Death is present all the time.
Now, my favourite Sci Fi of all time is Farscape - in which it sufficed that one character died during four seasons for it to keep the illusion.
Ah, enough ranting.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

The camera work on Battlestar Galactica could be more authentic. If they are going to use that jitter approach then they should use it more in handicam (?) method rather than on a steadycam that makes it look forced.
You eventually ignore this, but it's actually a little jarring as an episode begins.
BTW I just saw the first episode - I'm impressed - it's got me right back into it. Maybe the archetype characters, and sequences aren't having as big an impact as they should but I still enjoy it immensely (for example the team lost on the ground - the whole thing is too contrived and cliche).
Other than that; bring on the rest of the series.
