New game from Id Software, Splash Damage and Activision.
Not much info about it except that it's a mix of class based action and classic quake action vs. Strogg.
Uses Id Softwares new technology called "MegaTexture".

Press release: http://www.fz.se/artiklar/article.php?id=896

Edit: some info from the press release.
Quote:
"For years, fans have enjoyed incredible battles on the Strogg home planet; but with ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS, we're taking players back to the war that started it all - the Strogg invasion of Earth - where the choice is to fight with the humans or the alien Strogg in a massive campaign for survival," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.

Quote:
With realistic dynamic lighting and shadowing from headlights, searchlights and even the moon, battles can be fought during the day or night; while accurate simulation of the atmosphere, weather, and vegetation combine to create an unparalleled degree of realism. Battlefields are perfectly rendered using MegaTexture, a totally new rendering technology developed by id Software that crunches millions of polygons and a gigabyte-scale texture into a single, seamless and un-tiled landscape with unique detail down to the square inch or the un-obscured distant horizon.

Quote:
ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS will debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Activision's booth #1224 in the South Hall.

Wow, that looks good! If ID software is working on this game, so we can expect quality game, most important is a good multiplayer.

I think ID mostly sucks ass as they never seems to be able to do any enginge that works ok with any mid-range pc. Come on take a look at Doom3 that engine sucks ass becuase Source engine is sooo much better.
Now you may think this is OT as hell but it is not. Why?
Let me get to the point...
If ID are making a MP game (like BF or something) that is to support 32+ players and uses any of their crappy engines noone will be able to play it with more than 4 players in the first 6 months.

But now I am not gonna be all negative, if they make that graphics flow nicely and makes some good and inventive MP modes the game will kick ass... Very Happy

Why compare Source with Doom 3? Doom 3 is at least a generation ahead in technology, with real time lightning and way bigger textures.
Source still uses BSP style lightning, high poly models and sprites.
Of course a new nice looking engine won't run great on budget PC's, everybody said the same about the Q3 engine...
But that's the way it works in the PC scene, in a way the console scene beats PC's, you don't have to buy new hardware to your console every 6 months.

I'd agree, but I always thought Quake II was enjoyable - but don't ask me why, a lot of the reason rests on the atmosphere creating intro & music. After that, I was sold!

Other than those two though, ID have just farmed out crap.

The screenshot above looks MINDBLOWINGLY good. I'm drooling at the prospect of playing something that beautifully constructed.

But I was feeling the same towards DOOM III not that long ago. The end result was a mish mash of NOTHING. It was shit, plain and simple.

There was no passion or intensity in the game, instead of a claustraphobic, painfully tense game it was a piddly little no-nonsense (no nothing) shooter with plastic graphics.

Meh.

Hopes for this being anything more? ZILCHO.

Commander Keen, Wolfenstein, D1, D2, Q1, Q2, Q3.
I love most of their games, except for Doom 3, well I enjoyed playing through it, but it's not intended to be more than a horror singleplayer game.
It's all a matter of taste, but Carmack sets the standard.
Q1, the first FPS in true 3D.
GLQuake, the first game to support Glide/3dfx.
Q2, graphics never seen before.
Q3, same as Q2, people complained, said it didn't run on their mid-range PC's.
Doom 3, first FPS with real time lightning.

You might not like the games, but the fact is that Carmack sets the standards.

Q3 came out at the same time as Unreal Tournament, and Unreal Tournament had a much nicer engine that ran on more computer systems than Q3Arena.

Not only that but I prefer the UT style more. Both games are distinct in their mannerisms in a kind of way if you see what I mean.

All ID games I played were enjoyable. Hell, I thought doom3 was better than HL2 in some aspects! This looks really... different from what ID has done before. Just hope it turns out right and runs at over 30 fps on midrange systems Razz Peace,

id has always had a problem with outdoor areas. even though the screen looks kickass, you can't tell the view distance or the map size, which has always been small compared to other engines. looks very nice, we will have to see...

Don't forget that that same team messed up the Single Player part of ET so much that id decided to scrap the project and release the Multi Player part for free.
Hopefully id will keep them on a tight leash and get this game on the right track.

mmm, I'm not sure there was supposed to be a SP. I know they wanted to release it for money, but decided to give it free, but because the great multiplayer.

Of course there was supposed to be Single Player.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/378/378423p1.html

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. This new stand-alone expansion isn't just about the multiplayer though, there is a completely new squad based single player campaign that was also shown running for the first time last night.

id Software and Activision announced today they are canceling the retail release of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. "Despite a strong effort from talented developers, the single player portion of the game did not progress as anticipated. Canceling the release was a difficult decision made in the best interest of the Wolfenstein franchise and fans. However, we remain excited about the progress and direction of Enemy Territory multiplayer. Over the next several months the focus of our development will be to complete the multiplayer portion of Enemy Territory and provide it as a free downloadable expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein".

at least best in making engines for fps fragfest games Very Happy
Their single player experience often lacked a bit, but i still enjoyed every single game from id. But where they really shine is the multiplayer stuff and the modability of their games. They single handedly invented game modding really. Without id there would be no modding scenes and good community support imho
