use riva tuner http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/&ei=pgsBQ-fnOarYQbGz4ZcC
bump it up in 5 mhz increments and run some 3d marks till you can see artifacts then knock it back a few mhz. unless you want to vmod to get extra speed .. or try a bios mod with extra volts... think they work on 6800gt

I heard you could overclock GT to an Ultra but I dont think I will bother tho! Warm components are great concern of mine!

May the NFOrce be with you always.

they produce loads of heat at stock speeds with stock heatsink... get a zalman gpu cooler and some ram sinks then youll hit ultra speeds and temps will be acceptable

I read the XFX default setup is almost fine for OC'ing..

http://www.thetechlounge.com/review.php?directory=xfx_geforce_6800_gt_256&page=13

So I should get *almost* Ultra speeds at stock Smile! I will look into it though, thanks for the advice Smile!

Actually, I own a Chaintech 6800GT, and while the stock speed temperatures are rather high, the OC temps aren't much higher.

Definitly worh the OC.

I use RivaTuner, before you ask. Razz

sYn, I have the exact same card as you.. I was able to OC mine to Ultra speeds with the stock heatsink and fan. All I did was use the Coolbits registry hack for the nVidia drivers. Here's a link: http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/39-p1.php

I didnt really try going much beyond the stock ultra speeds. I figured I should just consider myself lucky.

Also, the nVidia driver does show chipset temp, and I only saw a minor increase in temperature at the Ultra speed. Thats all with air cooling. No fancy water cooling.

Well guys.. the card is installed and I just OC'ed it to 400Mhz core speed keeping the memory @ 1000Mhz

It hit 75c under strain!!! I have a feeling that might be a little too hot :\? I don't know though, you tell me?

I didnt see any GFX issues at all, so maybe Im good? Anyone know what the ULTRA is clocked too?

I'm running my MSI GeForce 6800GT PCIe 256mb at 402/1105
Stable in all games.
Max temp at load is 60-65c..
I can get it higher too, but I keep it like this now with stock cooler..

Gonna change to that Zalman GPU cooler so I get lower temp and less noise..
I got a 7700alcu cooler for my CPU, and it's great! Very Happy

I hate you.

I might be mistaken but,

6800GT has less (activated)pipelines than 6800Ultra, so even if u OC the biatch 2 ultra speeds u wont get equal perfomance... BUT u can however activate the disabled pipelines via rivatuner, BUT u might get artifacts and such on the screen, so do it on your own risk.

Btw all this depends on the manufactor and so on...

Ok, I have a really stupid (i think so anyway) question.

When u OC, ur shit gets warmer right? You can counter this by installing more fans or getting a cooled case etc...but, what if u had a lil air conditioning unit and just blasted it the cpu (while having the tower case open on the one side)?
Would it essenitally do the same thing? Cuz Ive been thinking about OCiing my computer in a number of way, but I dont wanna go an buy a fan and install it, im too fuckin lazy. But I have an air conditioning unit layin around (got central air a few years back) so i was wondering if it would work? ghetto yes, but will it work? lol Smile

Mmm.. well the heat difference overclocked and clocked normaly is very nominal.. always hits about 70c or just over.. the threshold seems to be 150c? Am I wrong?

What heat should I be getting under strain and not under strain for the GT model?

Mine sits at 64C idle and 68C under Doom3 load.
According to the nVidia drivers, shutdown temp for the core is 120C (ouch)
so, I wouldnt be too concerned.

Stock clock speed for Ultra is 400/1100 The Ultra Extreme has a 450mhz core but still has a mem clock of 1100.

Mine probably runs cooler because I have about 8 fans in my case moving air. Plus, I keep my house air conditioned, so that helps a little too..

SycoShaman: Opening the cover and blowing cold air directly on the parts will keep things cooler overall. You just need to make sure the air isnt too cold or condensation will form and that will cause all kinds of problems.

Yeah I thought I'd gotten the clocks right Smile! So Im currently at 400/1100 with an idle temp of 50ish. Underload it rises to 70 hitting a high of 77 during a Doom3 video (in which I may have seen GFX distortions, however I am not certain if it was just a game glitch). During gameplay there are no GFX distortions at all and the card runs at around 68-74..

As far as the card is concerned, I could not be happier, Im getting constant 60FPS in Doom3, FEAR 50FPS.. amazing.. Totally smooth and no slow down at all!

I'm happy with mine too.. It kicks ass in every game.. UT2004 especially.

I mostly get 60fps in Doom3, but I've also got this card on an older board that only does AGP 4x.. So, I know I'll get better performance when I upgrade my board, CPU and mem later on this year..
Still running a P4 2.53ghz with 1 gig of 1066RDRAM here..
Cant wait to get an AMD64 3800 with a couple gig of PC3200 dual channel..
