Just curious if anyone here has used this (I'm aware it's affil with "evil fileplanet") considering all the talk about buying cd keys online?

Obviously my biggest concern is the online activation. If the DRM server is offline, does that mean I can't play? I noticed they have SC:CT available...I'm assuming SF3-free (as there's no cd to check?). Wouldn't DRM be easier to crack (not saying I want SC cracked, just wondering from a 'warez' point of view)?

It just seems this is what everyone wanted...a way to DL games instead of buying them from the store. But I get the feeling most still prefer to own a cd+manual+printed box art?

Problem is the price.
The price isn't that much better than in the store, people want downloadable games because it should offer a much better price.
If the game was $50 in store and $15 downloaded, then it would be a hit.
$50 in store, $40 online isn't huge deal.

I have been tempted to buy games from there several times, but one fact always turns me off, I believe you have a limited amount of installs, which is totally lame in every way.

That would be crap. Though I haven't read anything about it on their site. It was a big concern of mine aswell. Also I was bothered by the type of copy protection. I don't mind DRM, but what happens if I want to play a DRM protected game while my cable modem is fritzed?

From their site:
"Your purchase stays in our records, so you can download and re-install your game anytime in the event of a hard drive crash. Of course, you can always back up your downloaded game to a CD as well - each time you install your game, our digital-rights management server will check the number of active licenses you have (the number of copies you are allowed to run at the same time.)"

To me that says I can install it anywhere I want, but I can only run one copy at a time. So if my internet is cut off, I've just blown serious cash. I'm hoping it's more Steam like where it only needs internet to activate, and from then until you delete it you no longer need to verify it.

I'd never use the service for new(er) releases, but it seems like they have some ok deals on older titles that might be harder to comeby in retail channels.

- -edit- -

Just read the TOC (funny how buying a game in a store isn't a contractual obligation but downloading it online is ) It pretty much covers the usual stuff, and nothing is all that scary, othat than the usual "we can change the service whenever we want and may render your purchase useless" stuff.

On the FAQ:

How many times can I install the game I bought?

As many times as you like. As stated above, remember your game is for you alone. Each time you install it you deactivate any previous licenses.

So that's a relief. This sucks, however:

Where do I get patches for the game I bought from Direct2Drive?

You must use patches we provide for Direct2Drive games. Outside files cannot be used to patch Direct2Drive games.

Is my game compatible to any expansion packs I buy at the store?

No. Direct2Drive games are not compatible to expansion packs purchased at retails stores on cdrom. Only expansion packs offered by Direct2Drive are compatible to Direct2Drive games.

those last 2 points mihgt just be to make you buy more stuff from them. Either way that patching is fucked up if it is true

The contractual obligation happens when you install the game and skip the game EULA.
