ok, it s like this, i got a gf in the uk, and i live in germany. i m starting to study in 2 months and she has to do gcse levels before studyin (she actually has done A levels already, but in india, theyre not accepted in england). so when she s done she s planning to move over to germany and live with me, because studying here is cheaper.
now she would need to learn the language well before she can apply to a german university, so what do you think, how long would a person at the age of 22 approximately need to learn a language, while living in the corresponding country?
i think 1 year would be enough to talk to people without problems, 2 years would be more than enough to apply to a uni. what do you think?

Well if you want to learn her German it's way more difficult than you learning English... It may take longer... Like 3-4 years UNLESS she REALLY goes for it. Then she may know the basic stuff after a while.

well she knows a bit german already, basically traveller's german and the grammar basics.
she s planning to practice german in the next year till she moves here. and then she will be able to practice it through contact with german people.

lol thats actually not a bad idea with the stickers, i might do that.
and yea she will live with me for around a year before she actually starts having classes.
i guess it ll work out somehow.

Obviously it takes longer for some people to learn English, lol.

Well learning rates vary. I do believe that if she's actually IN germany and has no other means but to communicate in german then she'll learn a lot faster. Taking classes etc. might help but when you consider how many hours a high school person does in english (4 hours a week dependin on which school) and then over the course of 5 years..... its a shit loada hours. I dont believe I can speak Spanish that well and ive forgot most of it already after 1 year

Till you learn it, all varies on skill and hours put into and also how good the teacher is.

lol well she definitely isnt that kind of a genius.
i remember when i came to germany, i needed only 6 months to be roughly on the niveau of my german schoolmates, but thats not a good comparison as you learn faster as a kid and also is the level of language that elementary school pupils speak very low and simple compared to what she would have to learn.
i think i should only reply in german to everything and make her talk to me only in german, it woulkd be hard in the beginning, but definitely good practice.

My bro lives in tai wan and he got a gf over there. I'm pretty sure they speak english with each other and he took lessons with a teacher as well as being an english teacher himself (thats why he's over there) he didnt have any training or anything but still got a job at some top private school luckily teaching 4 year olds.
