Dammit all to hell. Fuck microsoft and windows and shit!

It's that time of year for a complete format. This time I was ready! Had my drives partitioned so that drive C was simply the OS and Program files, so no need to do heavy backups on my docs and shit. Made sure to backup emails and some other essential files....except FAVORITES!! FUCK!! Years of websearching fucking gone Sad

Then to add insult to injury, the windows intaller FUCKs up and nearly formats my 160gb data drive. I made EXPLICITLY sure I chose the small 10 gb C: in the partition screen, but every time I chose it, it would list it as if I chose the the other drive. Finally fix it by running a dos boot of partition magic. Finally get windows installed only to have chkdsk FUCK UP my data drive anyway. Recovering orphaned files MY ASS! I run an exe only to be told I just tried to run some ambigious dll in another folder! ARGH!

!#$!%@!#%

Partition is your best friend. One for windows, one for all your essential files and music and such. I also make bi-monthly windows drive images, meaninging i can restore to a fully working machine in like 2 hrs.

Thanks for the tip, I'm reinstalling Windows XP this weekend. My Windows is now FUBAR after two years of intensive usage; explorer.exe is buggy and games keep crashing to the desktop.

he meant the c: partition.. the one that only holds windows, programs etc... you dont need to format the other partition with all your personal files, movies, mp3s... just defrag it from time to time... so he has the c: partition backed up and can restore a clean system if he messed up anything in the time after the backup

i personally have it like that too... but i only backup my pics, writings etc to a 80g external drive and put it to a save place... if i compare losing personal stuff like my pictures comared to some movies(which i can redownload anyway) theres only 1 choice... personal data in a safe place... ive lost alot of pics and some lyrics before... i was close to beating the whole machine to pieces... so remember kids backups can save your day... some day...

right. like I said that's what I have. a c: (boot) partition that's 10gb and a d: (data) partition that's 150gb (160gb total - minus a few gigs for formatting and bs). Normally this isn't a problem, but something went wrong with my partitions and for some reason during windows setup when I selected delete partition on the c: (10gb) drive it picked the data drive instead. It was also grossly misrepresenting the size. Said my 150gb partition was only 130gb and was an unknown filesystem (it was an NTFS volume on a primary - not logical - partition)

As soon as the "formatting 130gb" screen popped up I was like "WTF!! OH SHIT!" and immediatly turned off the pc. Had to run Partition magic to fix the partition tables, and finally got the installer to pick C: instead of D: (keep in mind I was selecting c: all this time). Of course during install it ran chkdsk on the d: drive (not sure why since I was installing to CSmile and the format manage to 0 out a bunch of file entries before I could stop it. So now a ton of crap was reindexed and ended up corrupting anyway Sad

Bah!

i can has computar?!
