The Messenger
Release Date: 8/30/2018

The Messenger is an upcoming retro action-platformer indie video game developed by the Quebec-based video game studio Sabotage[1] and published by Devolver Digital.[2] It will be released on Windows through Steam and on Nintendo Switch.

Plot:

When a demon army attacks his village, a young ninja must travel the plague world to deliver a scroll that is vital to his clan's survival.

Gameplay:

The game presents itself as a simple tribute to 8-bit retro action-platformer in which the player controls a Ninja-like warrior sent on an important mission to deliver a magical scroll atop a distant eastern Mountain. During his adventures, the ninja will unlock new abilities like climbing walls, throwing magical shurikens, gliding and a Rope Dart. The game also uses a mechanic called "Cloudstepping" (gaining additional height from enemies while killing them). At some point in the game, the player unlocks the power to travel into the future effectively transforming the game into a 16-bit era metroidvania game, where new paths unlocks through the finding of secret passages and artifacts

I guess the Switch is destined to this crap. Early 90s called, they want their garbage back. Rolling Eyes

I've been downloading Switch games to use with the SX Pro and ... dear lord it's 95% indie games, many of who have been on every other console out there. The Wii U was like that as well - Nintendo needs to realize it needs more proper games instead of these low-budget, faux-retro games.

I was a huge fan of shinobi and ninja gaiden games. This gave me some serious nostalgia vibes. I am excited to isodemo it. Reviewers have had some really great things to say.

The problem is the timing. The nVidia Tegra is really not powerful at all, and we are at a time where modern engines cannot work on the Switch. This generation of engines has been predominately physically-based rendering, and PBR takes a large toll. Look at Rime, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Doom and Wolfenstein; they use PBR engines, and run at 320p-576p. That's unacceptable, even on the Switch' small screen. Zelda is PBR too, but the world there is relatively less complex (but a great accomplishment non the less).

On the other hand, take ports of 360 games; L.A Noire, Lego City Undercover and Skyrim run pretty well at 720p on the Switch. The reason is a much simpler graphics pipeline.

Other than Nintendo/Switch dedicated studios, Nobody seems to be willing to put the work to create an engine that is suitable for the Switch. It's understandable, the PBR pipeline is so different from an old-style pipeline, that it would require not only an engine rewrite, but an entirely new asset creation.

That's the least I have played, as I don't own it. I played on a friend's Switch, and it was fine in the section I played (free roaming and some mission).

Lego I do own and it's fine. Slow-down here and there but nothing annoying.

The point is that they are running at 720p or close to it. The other games mentioned run at 320p-576p and still have these slowdowns.
