When I try to start Fable I get a black windowed screen and fable jumps to 99% CPU. I upgraded to the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers and my SB Audigy drivers are current. I tried adjusting the audio hardware acceleration and that did nothing. Finally, I thought maybe my desktop resolution might be too high (16x12) but I didn't want to lower my res under my profile (rearranges all my icons) so I created a new user in XP, then logged in and decided to try fable before changing any settings....

It started immediately.. There's definately some configuration issue under my main profile (both profiles have the same startup folder/reg settings), but this was an easy way to check and it worked for me Smile

Good luck !

Try two things: Be SURE that sound and video are fully accelerated. Then try to make a new windows profile and start the game with it.

It shows a black screen with fable in the left top, then after 2 seconds it's gone and that's it
Must be my stupid Ati 9800 pro card... I hate ati, nvidia is just more compatible

Oh yeah, I run xp pro sp2 and latest drivers!

Did you create a new user in XP and start the game with that?

I think the problem is that Fable have problems playing the videos. But I'm not sure how to fix it. Try renaming the VIDEO folder to _VIDEO and make a empty VIDEO folder. See if you make it to the menu..

Yeah, I created a new user, which boots up with all the XP default stuff, but most my startup stuff is in the all users and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - so it shares the same login. I'll mess around with it later and see if I can come up with what the profile differences are. At least in my case, it must not be a hardware issue - just some sort of background software or configuration issue.

I'll keep trying to figure it out Smile

Many others have the same problem with the videos. I'll post a solution here if I find one.. Some said they did a codec rollback to fix it, though I don't know how they did it.

I have a 2,4 Ghz CPU 1Gb ram and an old Geforce Ti4400....(hate battlefield2 for not supportin that card). Same thing for me...load....then the black screen...no response n cpu workin 99% on the process. Does this mean the videos are focked?

one fix for the video problem is to go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx and download the codec pack for your OS. install it and it should wipe clear the offending codec (not sure which one it is, so if you have a special set of codecs that you absolutely need, you may want to avoid doing this).

My guess is you have windowblinds Wink Try unloading windowblinds or make a per-application rule for fable.exe to ignore/not skin. I got the same error and it helped Smile
