Age of Empires III

  • Official web page: LINK
  • Genre: strategy
  • Release date: October 25, 2005
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

    In this highly anticipated next installment in the "Age of Empires" franchise from Ensemble Studios, "Age of Empires III" places players in the time period of roughly 1500–1850, picking up where "Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings®" left off. As players work to establish their empire, they will take on the role of a European power struggling to explore, colonize and conquer North and South America.

    "Age of Empires III" introduces exciting new gameplay elements, including the all-new Home City and an incredible combat system. Players will find new civilizations to discover, random maps to conquer and a single-player campaign unlike any other. Players also will find stunning graphics as a result of a revolutionary graphics engine that pushes the limits of PC graphics technology in an entirely new way.
    _____________

    Engage in epic strategic battles. As players control the action, they can experience a new level of exciting combat with realistic physics effects, and have the option of engaging in battle with blades, gunpowder or both. Victory depends on the player's strategic battle plan.

    Develop and strengthen a unique, customized Home City. The Home City represents a player's capital back in Europe and plays a supporting role in the attempt to control the New World. The better the player performs in the New World, the more powerful his Home City becomes. Players can customize their Home City to reflect unique personality traits, making the Home City a vital character in the game.

    Explore a vibrant New World. Players can take advantage of elements of the colonial time period, including the ability to ally with Native Americans. They also can explore and find new resources in the Amazon rain forest, recover buried treasure from Caribbean islands, hunt bison on the Great Plains, compete to establish trade routes, and fortify the coast of New England.

    Experience stunning graphics. Players will witness new lighting effects and shadows while immersed in a world that feels bright and sunny, yet which has a softness and depth that is revolutionary to PC games. Thanks to the new physics engine, players will never see the same scene twice.

    Discover culturally diverse civilizations. Gamers can play as the British and have a stellar economy, or play as the French and easily ally with Native Americans. They can choose to play as the Spanish and have more support from their home country in Europe. Players have the option of playing as one of eight civilizations and, whichever one is chosen, players are guaranteed a unique and fulfilling experience.

Demo is finished Very Happy

Quote:

"Demo's done (it went out the door to marketing today, September 2)... Finally

The highpoints:
* SinglePlayer only, no MultiPlayer
* 2 scenarios from the CPN
* 2 RMs
* 2 civs"

Yes, to be quite sure, a ton of folks helped pull the demo together. Or, more appropriately, pull things out of the demo to pull it together. It actually ended up a very download-friendly size by the time we got done with it. Much smaller than I feared it would be
Yes, there are limits to things like the max HC levels and whatnot. We can't quite give away *that* much gameplay in the demo. And, yes, for those pesky hackers out there, we did actually go nuke the high end content, so you can go hack out the level limits, but it won't get you anything...

The demo's actually a good time. I didn't go back and specifically compare, but it's quite a bit more gameplay than I recall the AOM demo having. Though there's no need to start a petition if that turns out not to be true

It's liberating to actually get it done so soon; one less worry post-ship. But, since we're also putting it in the CE (to give to a buddy), we had to actually finish it with the rest of the game anyway.

On some of the other questions... Someone did properly guess both civs. No, the civs that are in the demo are fully functional (minus HC visual upgrades (too much space) and most of the HC card content (too much game)). http://aoe3.heavengames.com/

What does "HC" mean??

Is there any ETA on the release of the demo? Will it come in the next few days or in the next weeks? I can't wait to test how it runs on my computer. Are the specs posted above the official minimum system requirements (why no info about the graphics card?) ? Are the recommended requirements also known?

Too bad it has to go through marketing. They'll probably release the demo 2-3 weeks before the full game is released so people won't lose that "wow" feeling after playing the demo before they can buy it. Fans who will already be buying it and only want the demo so they can try it out asap probably won't be considered. Since the game won't be released until late October/early November, the demo probably won't be seen until early October.

Doesn't really matter to me, though. After learning about all the stuff thats been taken out I've lost a lot of interest in this game. For example, despite the awesome graphics units will still move around in pretty much the same way they did in previous AoE games (cavalry still trot around and look stiff, ships will spin in place when you make them turn, etc). Also, physics will be purely cosmetic and won't affect gameplay as originally promised and things like formations and height advantages have been taken out.

Where did you read this? If thats true, then damn thats going to suck. :\

Whats the point of making a game look amazing, if they're just going to remove most of the new features that was going to make this game both unique and omnipotent from other RTS games. WTF!!

yeah, id like a source on all this too. as to my knowledge, formations were there from the beginning as a feature. in all the QA with the devs they talk about AI and formations and i cant really see them going back on that at this point. as for the physics, i dont think it was ever 'promised' that it would affect gameplay. since when did game devs make oaths that features would be in a game at release anyways? besides i dont see this taking away from the fun factor any and aoe was never going for the realism aspect. as for the ships and horses ill just wait and see. if the game kicks ass aside from units not moving as lifelike as id like, it will still be a kickass game.

Got my info from the heavengames forums, where the devs regularly post. All this stuff is recent, too:

8-29-05
"Some features just do not add enough to the game to stay in. Formation was one of those features that hurt to cut but in the end when we look at how much better the game is now it is hard to justify keeping it. Groups of units will form up into formation when they march. Units also have really interesting animations when moving in formation or fighting. We take the best from the features that we experiment with."

Details on ship movement can be found here: http://aoe3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=1,23259,0,10

As for the other stuff, that forum has a crappy search feature and I don't really feel like going through dozens of pages of posts to find specific ES quotes. If you still need something confirmed just ask on that forum and one of those ES guys will probably answer (their names are in blue and they usually have "ES" in front of them).

As for the demo, I can't believe I was right about that. I was pretty much talking about a worst-case scenario where marketing didn't give a shit about the fans and only cared about using the demo to get as much money as possible. Even though fans of the game would be pissed at this decision, they'd still end up buying the game. Crafty lil' devils, aren't they? Even if they release the demo early in the US since the game will be sold here about two weeks before it's sold in Europe, it still means the demo won't be seen until early October.

Yeah, I've seen the preview where you can watch the jerky sea movement contrary to the E3 preview, where ships seem to move pretty realistically. I was looking through that forum myself and was dissapointed at reading other tidbits, like they just recently got the AI implemented in the multiplayer game-a feature that's been in every single AOE so I just assumed would be in from the start, rather than put in at the last stage in development as a sort of 'extra'. And the fact that one of the developers admits that the AI is 'pretty easy' on hard mode isn't a good thing either. As for formations, taking that feature out now is close to being an insult to fans who have followed the game's progression from the start. I am just amazed at how this game has been in development since AOM and yet how they are changing and cutting off so much just before testing, a bad sign for any game. It's just a pity the big houses give you so little incentive to stay excited about any pc games these days. I guess it's time to start saving for xbox360 Rolling Eyes
