my new pc only has 1 IDE interface port which my hardrives are using. The rest are sata. My dvd burner [sony DRU-500A] is connected to a sata port using a Sata to Ide converter [Abit Serillel 2].

Problem is this: my burner reads fine but as soon as I try to burn something my pc just freezes. I reckon its because the converter doesn't translate sata back to atapi.

Do any of u techi experts know of a way I can get around this problem without having to buy a new DVD burner? Is there some kind of card that allows for more IDE ports and if so, how does it work?

oh yeah, one more question. Is it worth hooking up my laptop to my pc so I can use the burner on that? Would that work well & how easy would that be to do?

I know I sound like a right noob but thats coz I am Smile all this new technology is making things real complicated.

I could do with a bit of help on here since my shuttle has only 1 IDE cable but i wanna put both of the HD's from this comp in there... any adapter (as long as it's £10 max) will do fine. I dont want a USB - converter though since I just wanna fill the caddy's inside the case instead of having overhangs.

Well you know that the IDE channel has only got support for 2 IDE devices. One master and One Slave.

You could get a RAID card?

So a RAID card can be used to expand ATA ports?
Can I use a RAID card and keep my hardrives seperate, and even boot from them. I was unaware that the card could be used in such a way.

I know that you can buy a PCI IDE controller, a friend of mine has done that and he has no problems what so ever. I don't know what type it is or anything like that, just that he has it and it's working.
