I wonder how long it will take for a modchip...sounds like good security.. 
According to Xbox 360 engineer Chris Satchell and BBC News, Microsoft's next generation console will have security built directly into the hardware to make it virtually "unhackable".
The first Xbox's security vulnerability allowed users to modify the hardware (via a modchip) and/or software to upgrade the console's hard drive to illegally store games and emulators. But Microsoft is taking precaution with the Xbox 360 to make it as hack-proof as possible.
Satchell says that the Xbox 360's security has been built from the "ground up" with custom silicon, giving Microsoft the ability to create new levels of security that even the hacker community has "never seen before".
Satchell admits that hacking the Xbox 360 hardware may not be completely impossible, but will take a considerable amount of time, money, and expensive hardware, meaning the effects probably won't be widespread.

don't know, but the console will be priority for the hackers just becasue its Microsoft and something new, nothing is uncrackable, PSP,cgamecube, all with priority media and believed to be unhackable now look at them. Too be fair it doesn't want to be cracked striaght away or it may become another Dreamcast, devolpers and likes do need money and be seen to be making a profit otherwise they will jump ship to PS3

If it is indeed unhackable then it wont sell..
Well it will straight after launch.. cos there are always the saddos that queue up outside shops overnight to be the first to buy something new.
But after say 3 months unless it has been hacked then it wont sell well..

of course it'll sell, lol, we who download are a small minority compared to the masses. It possibly helps to sell a system if its cracked but in the end its down to pricing and marketing and game company support that sells a system to normal people

I've also heard that every batch of them will be slightly different. So a hack may well work on one 360, may not work with another.
I do know that I would never buy a console that cannot be modified.

I disagree. Theres encryption around that would take all of computing power available today 12000 years to decipher. So no someone can't uncreate all human technology.

Nothing is indeed unhackable. But it´s like Jenni said, it will take time. And loads of it. But it´s still not unhackable.
And about the Xbox360, i´m pretty sure it will take longer for hackers to hack, compared to the Xbox, but it WILL be done, no doubt about it.

I doubt it will take a month but it will happen. Considering the complexity MS has added into the dashboard this time it would not surprise me if softmod will be king this time around.
No matter I preordered mine today as it seems as if sweden will get very few the first time around. Preorder FTW!
And I can live with buying a few games actaully, got gonna make me sad to buy Oblivion, GR3, Gears of war and a few others...

Same here. I dont got huge piles of money laying around to buy $50+ games. Buying the console itself would require a lot of money saving. Personally, I hope something like swap magic will come out but it can take its time. Seems every first version of a console has some issue.
My question is, if they do make a mod, will we have to get hd dvd media or will groups release a dvd version? Thats if the hard drive thing isnt working out or dont have one.

The xbox360 uses standard dvd media, so no you wouldn't have to get hd-dvd media.

I really have not taken the time to look at the XBox360 but what kind of Internet connectivity does it include? On the old one you avoided MODs and XBox Live but on the new one is it the same thing? Does the new one require Internet connectivity now? My guess in addition to the upfront security the Internet would play a bigger role validating & modifying security...

Nah seriously I preordered it from Game as it is near, for once follows the prices AND I know the dude keeping this one running... 
Other than that komplett.se and webhallen.com has avaible for preorder too if I am not mistaken..

Well everybody knows that the games prices will be fuckin expensive, so eventually, people will stop buying them or get one once in a while.
Like i said several times, if game companies would drop the prices around 30$/40$ poeple will buy them instead of downloading them but paying 75$ for a game i beat in 7 hours...thats just sick

I hope ya heard wrong, but if this is true it dosn't sound good.
I think I might hold off on preordering.
Can anyone remember how long the xbox took to crack?
One good thing about this is Microsoft is hated and alot of people are gona love to try and crack it...and when theres money to be made on modchips, theres going to be interest |

I bet if it is cracked using a type of modchip the installation is going to be very difficult. One of the reasons I didn't mod my ps2 was because I didn't want to solder 40+ wires to get full functionality. Even with 1.6 xbox versions there is only what seven wires. The more soldering involved the more chance of screwing up. Plus whats up with MS's security. Didn't I see smartxx already had access to a dev kit. Someone needs to be fired for allowing that to happy.

i am onr og them people on line with a server who business is to download all dvd films ps2 xbox and in december be downloading xbox 360 game even if the modchip not got i will have all the games all ready for my customers i got a mod ps2 and xbox and picking my xbox 360 up on december 2nd i all ready got 10 order for customers who want there360 modded and they not even brought them the prices in uk will be between £45 to £50 for each game big differnt to £5 each so asap as the mod chips are available i let you all know but i give it max of 2 months and they be available

Thanks for the link but it dont really tell us anything new.
Hate to bring this up since I dont know if its true but friend swears he read on a site that the 1st version 360s will have dvd drives but the next version will have hd-dvd and that some how, the 1st version will be upgradeable. I find it very hard to believe that they would change something like that between different version. Any thoughts?

I don't think HD-DVD will serve as the medium for games. I think it will be for people who want cheap HD-DVD movie player. One of the reason Microsoft didn't pick Blu-Ray was that Blu-Ray disc don't allow the data to be downloaded to the HDD so that the movie can be stream. If Blu-Ray disc allow streaming, you can stream Blu-Ray movie from your PC on to the Xbox 360. That was Microsoft intention I think, but Blu-Ray have more securities than HD-DVD which prevent that. Personally, I don't think either formats will be standard because consumers are slow to adopt to new things. They don't want to spend more for movies and a new player. If people want quality so much then there wouldn't be so much movie piracy on the net.

MS said at a later date if the need arises then yes they could add HD-DVD, at the mo Blue-ray is looking less and less atractive as a medium to use and only real advantage is media size. Personally think HD DVD will be the better format in the end and its just going to be another Betamx vs VHS .
If xbox360 games are expensive on normal dvd9 i hate to think how much Blue-Ray discs is gonna cost

I got a question should I get an early version of xbox360 or wait?
Mabey the first batch will be easyer to mod...exspecally when it sounds like there going to ship different version batches.
Could this be something like whats happening to the PSP where ya have to down grade the firmware.

Sometime it's good to get early version, but i would wait for second. Early version is more vulnerable to hack, but it's also not the best one because there's a risk of defect.
If you hate it, ignore it.
