Hi peeps,
a mate of mine wants to upgrade his mobo/cpu. Right now he has a duron 800mhz :lol , yeah i know. He can't spend too much money so he is thinking about a celeron 3ghz, or sempron 2600/2800 in that range. which one of those would you recomment. It will be mostly for gaming...Any help would be appreciated. TIA

well like i said, he doesnt have much money to spend, so an amd64 is out of the question lol. so you'd rather get an sempron 2600 instead of a celeron 3ghz? even though the sempron is tacted at under 2ghz? seems weird to me to be honest...

lol ... from what I read the newer celerons aren't as bad as they used to be ...

but if it's for gaming ... why not spend the extra $100 bucks on a decent processor ...

and what video card does he plan on using?

I'm just thinking that if he hung on to the duron 800 for so long then he should get something that will still be ok in a couple of years...

You're throwing your cash away on the two cpu's you've chosen. Save a little bit extra and you won't regret it, but now and you most certainly will.

for an extra $90 he'd be much happier with this:

don't forget he's probably going to want a RAM upgrade.

so really, like $150 for mobo, $175 for cpu, $75 for some more RAM ... $400 bucks for a decent upgrade ...

Have a look here first.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/index.html?modelx=33&model1=74&model2=42&chart=26

I selected your choices ie celeron2.8 and sempron2800 and frankly there is no difference between the two. You can make other choices and when you are done you can factor in the price of the selected models and make a better choice.

use that tom's hardware guide to see where the amd 64 3000+ is.

I'd say that is your best bet for an extra few bucks.

get yourself one of the new amd 64 socket 939 opterons either a 144 ( 1.8ghz ) or a 146 ( 2.0ghz) and a good 939 mobo , theese chips are getting crazy overclocks on stock volts and stock cooling all seen so far reach 2.8ghz easy , which means you have yourself a $150 fx57

Comming from an expert of celerons, DON'T! simple as that. The AMD chip your looking at is just as crap, go a bit further and get a P4 or a AMD64!
