I've never really understood why people like IRC for getting stuff. It seems like you have to wait in a queue for about 4 days before u can get something and it seems hard to find certain stuff.
It can't compare to newsgroups in my experience anyway.

Never waited more than 20 minutes... IRC is one of the best medium to find recent stuff, with newsgroups. But of course, newsgroups have more but everyone doesn't have access to them.

Newsgroups are certainly an amazing source for all sorts of things, but as shroom said not every has that pleasure. I'm currently living without and although I get all of the "information" I am after it tends to take a good few weeks longer than it would if I had a news server sitting on my network (by that I mean ISP network). If anyone cares to PM me some news suppliers who are cheap and speedy, that would be wonderful.
As for P2P, I dont like using it, my housemates however choose to bombard my net connection with BT, which is currently the only thing running on our dedicated download server.

Can anyone explain what the heck "newsgroups" are ? FTPs or something ?

Back in the first days of the internet, newsgroup was THE thing to get news
You signed on it, and downloaded text files with the news in them
They've been converted to serve warez, most often that not you have to pay to get a leeching account. Never all that much though (around 10$/month) They're often acknoledged to be the best low-end source

DC++ is the ultimate P2P app if you've got a T3 line  Log on to the 100Mbit exclusive hubs, like the ones exclusively available to university IPs. Speeds are pretty insane, >1MB/s on average though I've also had 11MB/s once Most files are not available until a day after their official release, but who cares when you can leech so fast
