I <3 Stem Cells.

Quote: | According to WorldNetDaily scientists in Korea report using umbilical cord blood stem cells to restore feeling and mobility to a spinal-cord injury patient. The research, published in the peer-reviewed journal Cytotherapy, centered on a woman who had been a paraplegic 19 years due to an accident. After an infusion of umbilical cord blood stem cells, stunning results were recorded: 'The patient could move her hips and feel her hip skin on day 15 after transplantation. On day 25 after transplantation her feet responded to stimulation. |

Well, I totally support Stem Cell research, tehcnology and development...while its not the fountain of youth so to speak, from what ive read and seen, this could cure alot of disaease that plague the world...cancer for one, all forms aswell...stem cells can be whatever the body needs right...so finding a vaccine or even a cure for aids could result from stem cells...
Ive read and i think weve discussed the religious and moral questions surrounding Stem Cell research...but still, I dont understand the conservative view on this...rather, it seems those who currently make Billions (if not Trillions) of the current diseases out there want to keep things like this illegal...so they can pump us full of designer drugs and make tons of money

The hang up about Stem Cells in the US has to be money.
I was watching Montel about, oh, a month and a half ago. He's a big supporter of stem cell research cuz of his MS and all. Anyway, they had this little girl on there (13 or so)...she was diagnosed with terminal cancer when she was 11 - Dr.s gave her like a year to live...so for 6 months they tried every type of conventional therapy u can think of for cancer. Well, when they exhausted their conventional options, her parents heard of a clinic in the dominican that does stem cell transplants. They came up with the money and the dr there said she'd need prolly 6 treatments over 3 months...long story short, the cancer went into complete remission 1 month after her final treatment. Touching story and clearly demonstrates the potential of Stem Cells....if they would focus on this and organ cloning and transplants, i think we'd eventually strike the fountain of youth so to speak....
but, all the drugs these ppl have to take keep the rich, rich right?

Syco,
Actually, the stem cell debate here in the US is of a more religious nature.. There are two primary sources of stem cells.. Umbilical cords and aborted fetuses. Since most far right Christians are dead set against abortion, it has caused a real problem for stem cell research here.
Its too bad too.. Stem cell research has the potential to eventually allow people to grow their own replacement organs without fear of tissue rejection. It could help to extend life in a way that has not been seen ever in history. I have a wife that's diabetic.. I for one hope they get moving and get the research done..

yeah man, Im well aware of the religious overtones to stem cell research in the US
we've had a big discussion bout this before i think, like on the forum.
I think both however, the money and religious aspects, are one in the same if u go high enough - in terms of ppl profiting of medicinal drugs and therapies + illegal kick backs (or whatever their called) and under the table deals...
My personal opinion, if something is still a cell, which is what it is, is not life and producing these via cloning or donation should be allowed.
As for the umbilical cord issue, I see nothing wrong with this, as long as it voluntary.
I wish medicine, in the US (which has the most money in terms of research I'd say - Canada is up there, but its not quite as well funded as the US) would move toward organ cloning and that sorta thing. I mean, some organs can be cloned already...imagine if every say 10 years u get new heart, new lungs, new kidneys, liver, bladder etc etc the only thing i think they couldnt clone is the brain, but who knows how long the brain can last if u sustain the body...maybe thats how the alien's do it, they travel great distances as essentially they live for forever or however long they can sustain their brains....i know, totally out their concept...but is it? ive heard on CNN, CBC, BBC etc news channels that within the next 25 years, we should be able to clone hearts and all that with relative ease....Im hoping

Yep, they really are. It's something I believe in highly, and any sort of religious mumbo jumbo should be thrown out the fucking window.
