Just some facts to keep this thread clean:- This release is NOT a PC game, yet it's an interactive DVD movie, meaning you can play it on a standalone DVD player (or on your PC using a DVD media player)
- The 'DEViANCE' nfo mentions the game should just be installed, then played: this is obviously wrong as it's an interactive DVD game (no installation required).
- This game was actually already finished and developed in the 80s (though for non-PC systems), hence the "70's comics" style:
Quote: |
Thayer's Quest was Dyer's attempt at improving the gameplay formula he established with Dragon's Lair.
(...)
Thayer's Quest was adapted and released as an add-on for Dragon's Lair arcade systems. This wasn't a bad idea in theory, but the problem lay in the fact that Thayer's Quest required two sides of a laserdisc, and it's simply not possible to change sides in an arcade cabinet.
(...)
Regardless, Thayer's Quest didn't get totally swept under the rug. In 1995, a game called Kingdom was released for the Philips CD-I, which was basically a remake of the game using the original animation. It was later released as a DOS game from Interplay around the time that the silliwood craze was hitting PCs around the globe thanks to Myst. |

So, please everyone telling hos 'sucky' this game must be because it's ancient: please stop posting. Let this thread be a positive beacon for unreleased old games that will still see the light of day...
I personally look forward to seeing all American Lasergames re-released at some point, not just the 'MadDog'-like titles that were released for DOS initially already. Those games rock, and with the PC-DVD format, those games would be even cooler.
I just played it a little, as an interactive DVD game, the story unfolds before you and at some crossroads, you are asked to choose the path you want to take. Sometimes, a wrong choice leads to your demise and you can continue from your last point, and choose another path. It seems like they listened to critics on Dragon's Lair, because you now get a seperate screen in which you can choose your way, leaving you with enough time to navigate to the option using your remote.
As with most of the old games, the story plays an important role here, so basically you're watching a cartoon, and influencing its outcome. I'm not too sure whether this game can have multiple outcomes, though something like this is possible.

Okay, I'm going to to you how sucky it IS because I have played it, and it's amazingly bad. The art is definitely 1970/80. The plot, well, I didn't get that far before throwing my mouse in HORROR. The controls, obviously, suck. It's a DVD. DVD players weren't meant to play video games, and using Media Player Classic to play one is only slightly less painful.
I tried to like it, really. It's just really that bad.
