Ok, I went to format today, and i get an error msg saying something is using the disk (C drive) and cant format. It then asks me to close any open programs and re try...i did that and i got the same msg.
I turn off all the shit in the sys tray bar.
Scanned for virsus (all sorts, trojans, worms, etc) and adware/spyware
Ran a Windoctor diagnostic
Checked my graphics card to see if it was operating properly as well as sound card
Check all devices
Checked all my drives
Ran Scan disk on my c drive

As a result I had no virsus', adware/spyware, windows error, disk error's or anything of the sort...Im lost, what do I do now?

And my pc is weird...it didnt come with a windows xp install disc, rather its like auto loaded...the last time i formatted, I simply went to My Computer, right clicked my C Drive, chose format - formatted, rebooted and reinstalled windows to the point of when i bought the computer. I think I needed the 6 diskette set, which i have and everything worked fine...reinstalled both service packs, all my appz and games and assorted shit

Any help is welcome

eh, you cannot format the C: while you're in Windows. It makes sence that it give an error haha.

Looks like you have a packard bell/dell/compaq or an acer as brand. Am i correct?

They mostly have the windows disc stored on another hd. Check programs in the startmenu to see if there is any kind of systemrestore software by those brands.

Skid is right. You should never format from within windows. That is like a doctor trying to operate on himself. If you don't have the XP on disc (very few people have) then you must have a 'recover' or 'restore' disc which maybe works with a partition on your drive to restore your comp to factory settings.
If you don't have such a disc and/or a partition then do not format until you are sure you have XP somewhere.
Personally I think that people resort to format too quick and often when it is not needed. I know someone who formats once a month. I have only had to format once when I was testing a win2k disc on my win98 comp.

Just to be helpful, I would suggest using those diskets, you will need to boot from them and it should pull all your programs/windows/settings from when you bought the PC. They will no doubt be stored on a hidden partition on your Hard drive..

Good luck buddy, let us know if you need any help Smile!

P.S. I still love you..

Find an Xp disc, Boot from your XP disc...make your CD drive your first boot up device in your Bios first:] Another option anyway

I know, thats what tripped me out the first time...I still dont get it. I went to my computer - right clicked c drive, clicked format, it logged me outta windows, did some dos stuff and started formatting and all that
Ah well, I'll grab xp and try it the normal way

Why format in the first place...?...Just go by what cybersurfer said and reinstall windows in another directory....If you want to delete the Program Files directory too i suggest getting a copy of Windows PE and boot from that first delete the shit you want to get rid of then reinstall WIN...
