- Official web page: LINK
- Publisher: Electronic Arts
- Developer: Lionhead
- Genre: RTS
- Release date: 30 september 2005
- Story/Description:
Quote: |
Will you be an evil or benevolent deity? From the creative mind of god game developer Peter Molyneux comes Black & White 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed hit Black & White. In this strategy game, you reprise your role as a powerful deity in search of a following and return to the once idyllic world of Eden, where the discovery of weaponry and warfare has tainted the beautiful landscape. With the help of your gigantic Creature that you raise from infancy, you must earn the respect and worship of the natives. How you choose to do that, whether through nurturing them or terrorizing them, is up to you.
The player will have many choices to make in Black & White 2. Once you and your creature have convinced the people that you are a god, you then have to decide if you are going to care for your believers, building them huge cities that are beautiful and safe, or if are you going to rule the land causing death and destruction by leading vast armies into battle.
As players enter this warring world they will have the option to make tribes coexist peacefully, encouraging villages and towns to grow into metropolises, or prompting them to inflict their will upon others by creating and commanding large armies that seek to dominate and conquer.
You have a Creature to do your bidding and train as you will, and you may rule over your people as you wish. This evolved Creature can help you nurture their communities grow into huge, towering cities. Or you may use death, suffering, and fear. The Creature has been massively advanced since the original Black & White, and now has a vital role as a military leader and command unit. He can learn strategies, lead armies into battle, and is the ultimate battlefield weapon himself, armed with many powerful new attacking and shielding Miracles.
The epic world of Black & White is yours for the asking. But remember-if you want peace, prepare for war.

You gotta give molyneux credit, because he actually tries to innovate, which is a rare thing nowadays.
I'm also looking forward to his other game, BC.

THe problem with his games are that they fall short of Expectations. B&W did this but to a lesser extent since we weren't exactly sure what is was. Just something like populous but not exactly was the word. Fable did this, it lost alot of its original development momentum it seems. I hope B&W2 does not follow in step.

I'm also a big fan of Black & white and I bought it in those days I bought games. I really like the concept of the game and it is very innovative. I'm really looking forward towards this game and the shader effects on the creature looks awesome.

Black & White was quite nicely done but that creature stuff got on my tits. I had no idea how to get my creature to be any good so it sort of ruined it for me.

Yeah same here, there were alot of things I didn't understand, I was like 12 back then, i lacked brain capacity so to speak, but the game was awesome. I've never seen anything like it and it was very new so that really got me hooked, and i loved it.

dunno if this will be any good, cuz the first one was beautifull inovative and all that, but it was a major pain in the ass to train your creature, and look out for all the people ar the same time, my creature just didnt got what to eat, i tried to teach it to eat grain only but it kept eating citizens all the time, amd b&w2 will have some rts elements to it, i mean you'll have to handle your creature, your citizens and worry about enemy attacks all the time.

loved the first one, looking forward to the second one.
i don't think 4 years is too long to wait though, a good game has to have had a lot of effort put into it, and for it to be really innovative you've got to wait a while for technology to improve and for people to get bored of what else is around. i think they bring out sequels (both games and movies) far too quickly these days.
(although maybe im just saying all that because i have far too many games to get through at the moment that B&W2 will be out before im done even if it takes another 2 years )
and yeh Peter Molyneux is a god (god games, get it? )
Populous, Syndicate, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Black and White, Fable, they're all great, ambitious games. keep em coming!

From the B&W2 dev diary #7
"Something we really liked in the first game was allowing the player to experiment. This is something we hope to take further in the miracles in B&W2. Imagine, if you will, the fireball from the first game. You could basically toss it at your enemy, whereupon it would explode. It was rather gratifying. But now, you can toss them, hide them in traps, place them in your siege weapons, and roll them up to the gates of enemy towns; if you're a more defensive player, you can squeeze the fireball between your fingers and pour magma wherever you wish, in whatever pattern best suits your needs."
When i read such things my patience... just dies....

i think bc was cancelled. the movies is still on though...
edit: "B.C., Lionhead's announced caveman game, has been cancelled today by the company. Here's what Peter Molyneux had to say:
In announcing the decision to suspend work on BC, Peter Molyneux Managing Director of Lionhead Studios said "The decision to suspend work on any games project is always a very difficult one, particularly when it is a title with the potential of BC. We hope to revive the project at a later date and will endeavour to assign as many of the team as possible to other Lionhead projects.""

onsidering B&W 2 had added some classic RTS mechanics (chek the pics again) it is obvious the game will play faster, and as such, the Creature will learn and grow faster.
Truth of the matter is the creature was easy to train. Only it took TOO much time and also kinda unbalanced in learning. You could spend all day at it and he would EASILY learn megablast (all day) but to teach him where to take a dump or to constantly help the villages was a pain. The villages where like The Sims and steriods. They needed TOO much micro. You can't have much micro in a blend like this so I expect to see great things.

Black and White was a great game, it just wasn't what it was touted to be - I especially found it funny in hindsight that prerelease he was blabbering on about having took an alpha/beta of the game to MIT and had them all amazed at the artifical intelligence.
This incarnation doesn't look that different beyond the fur effects, bump-maping (?) and bloom effect.
Textures on the ground look stretched and low detail as well.
We'll see.

The graphics are state of the art for an RTS, i haven't seen any other RTS with such shaders and bumpmapping, and the game is still in production. Lol, and if you think that graphics are all they are upgrading then you must know nothing of the game, or you are blind, just by looking at the screens you see many new elements that B&W does not have.
