Graphically FIFA 2006 is not better. The textures used throughout the game are of an incredibly low quality, lower than PES, which makes them appear blurred and muddy throughout the game. It certainly detracts from the realism when the sponsor logo on a shirt for example is just a blurred mass of pixels instead of what you'll find in PES crystal clear clarity and distinction.
The player models too are not just deformed but at the wrong proportions. They also have very little difference of degree between players, not to mention the abominable faces which are composed of generic hair and face styles which lack the life and variety you'll find in the PES series.
Stadiums on the otherhand are pretty wonderful, there is a variety on offer and they faithfully recreate their namesake. Likewise the presentation in FIFA 2006 is much more flash, much more engaging. That is until you've seen the same cutscene for the hundredth time in the same match. Commentary too is the best this game has to offer and the best in a football game ever. Likewise it has a veritable choice of musical numbers unlike the PES series which uses generic musical creations which are both annoying and uninspired.
However, none of this matters because where football games are judged are not on their graphics, not on their presentation, not on their audio. If it were then sigames' Football Manager series would be in disarray because it certainly fails in all of those categories.
However where it makes up for it is in the gameplay and this is just something the FIFA games have yet to truly master. They are getting closer, but that's like saying someone who weighs 50 pounds has just lost a pound is losing weight - it's all relative and PES right now is the de facto standard by which all games are judged.
I recently read a review of FIFA 2006 and a great point was made is that the players in the game lack any dynamic hinged on their attributes. So for example if two players meet in FIFA, whereas in PES the game would utilise various calculations relating to inertia, proximity plus physical & skill attributes, in FIFA it's simply a case of who get's their first and who presses the button the quickest and the most often.
In FIFA players are just lumps of mass, in PES they are fragile players with dynamics.
Please don't listen to this person called Waffen-SS, he is probably STARTER in disguise. I remember arguing with him about FIFA ages ago and he doesn't listen to logic, he doesn't listen to facts - he's just a troll when it comes to this game so don't bite the bait he has no valid arguements.

Sorry guys, I have asked this before, but nobody has provided an answer in the past. I'm hoping that somebody who has played one or the other or both can answer:
With either game (Fifa or PES), is it possible to watch cpu vs. cpu match-ups during season/franchise mode (and play-offs) that your team is not involved in?
My appologies if this question is considered an intrustion, but it does deal with both games.

PES as a game is much better than Fifa.
BUT, the pc version of PES is a really really bad port , the controls are defined for a console, and on many machines it works really slow without a reason.
Signature rules. Options:
* Image (max 600x100 pixels, 60kb) - no text
* Image (max 200*50) + Text (max 2 lines)
* Text (max 4 lines)

once you've played pro evo, i can't see how any real football fan can go back to fifa. i wish i'd found pro evo earlier, i only tried it when pes3 came to PC, before that i thought fifa was the dogs todger. how wrong i was.

And what I really find amusing is this .... out of 300 billion people in the world, like 85 of them voted here for PES and they say PES the best game, lol fucking idiotic kids.
Also, dont forget to mention the weighless ball that floats around, stand around waiting for a balsl like baboons, there is soo much more wrong with this game but I cant be bothered listing it...god this game is terrible
And dont get my started on the graphics, PES graphics look like they were taken from GameBoy.
