Quake 4 blocking internet access

Hi all Smile

Scuse me for being a bit thick but what's this about blocking access from the internet? I don't have this game yet, but is this blocking just about when installing or does it mean no multi player can be played? If it's just about installing or starting up for the first time, can I just unplug my connection temporarily? Thanks Smile

No....u also need to block it because it contacts the id software server for verification....or u can get the key fix by Skullz (i think thats their name).

Next time, please check existing threads as it has already been explained why its needed and how to do it manually through the host file in ur sys folder...

Hi,
How can i block the access to quake4.exe? what i have to do? because i tried to add this on the hosts file "127.0.0.1 q4master.idsoftware.com". but it still asking me the cd key at the beginning of menu.
HELP PLZ Crying or Very sad

When you start Quake 4 a box will appear asking if you want to block q4's access. Click block and it Quake will run.

You are quite right sir. I checked some of the threads before posting but on doing another search just now, more detailed threads came up. My bad.

Ok, so I've read through all of the 6 page deviance thread and some of the clone CD one. It's the Clone CD file that I have. Here's what I understand so far. Either block access from the net, or, add the line mentioned to my hosts file. I added the line. There was also mention of the vaseline public server patch. One is a fake, one is genuine. I now have the genuine one. Some people got it to work. Some didn't, it just hangs for them. I will try it. If it doesn't work, no biggie, I will be buying the game anyway.

Some time later...

Everything works! I've been playing on 2 pub servers, one of which was pb enabled, one of which wasn't. In both cases, awaiting connection wss no more than a few seconds, then bang, I'm in. The punkbuster server did it's normal checks and that was that. Very Happy

As for the gameplay, well I'm pretty good at quake 3, but I'm shite at this! There are already leet players on the servers, and not having enemy models and brightskins to choose from sucks. I'm used to green keel on Q3. I couldn't see what the hell I'm aiming at because there's a lot of detail everywhere and it's all a bit on the dark side. I do hope an osp type mod can change these things. As far as strafejumping, it's good, but I personally don't think it's as fast as Q3. Well, I guess I'll get used to it all. It's looking good though.
