So heres the deal,

Almost one year ago I met this fellow, don't ask me why I'm remembering this now, and he had told me that he knew a simple regedit entry that could allow dial-up users to achieve speeds of 115k or close to. He seemed very posative that it worked and claimed it to work for himself. The only stipulation to this command was that it only works on Windows XP Pro. At the time I had little concern in the matter because I was still using my old computer that had Windows ME. Months have passed since then and I now sit in front of a new machine wondering what happened to this guy and the knowlege he claimed to hold. I've searched the net in great depth for such information but have come up dry every time. You'd think that if such information was out there it'd be found somewhere online for exploitation by the masses. But the better question, and the question I pose to you: Is such a thing logically possible, or was this guy filled to his ears with bullshit? Perhaps someone knows of people who have done such a thing or by some other means achieved such speeds. I am not asking for instructions, I'm just asking for people wiser than myself to post their opinion on why or why not this could possibly be done, or if they have heard accounts of such a thing happening.

The always thirsty for information,

Its not possible.

The only speed optimiser I know off is this one.

Hiya,

For Windows95, 98, 98SE and Millenium Systems
(Win2K / XP below)

I Use www.Dumeter.com to measure upload/download speeds.
Install it first then compare the before and after speeds on the same, local servers.

PLEASE NOTE DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO MODEM SETTINGS WHILST MODEM IS IN USE, and Always back up the registry before making any alterations to it

1)Try connecting several times to your ISP, and make a note of any connection speeds you get.

Your Connection Speed is shown in the taskbar by the Lights if you leave your mouse over them for a few seconds

If you're lucky, you'll always get the same speed , but many people will get several.

If you have several, then you must change all of the connection values you get (see below)

2)Click on the Start button and select Run

3)Type REGEDIT, then click ok

4)HKEYLOCALMACHINE

5)SYSTEM

6)CURRENTCONTROLSET

7)SERVICES

8)CLASS

9)MODEM

10)0000 (Unless there are more listings here in which case select the higest numbered one)

11)RESPONSES

12)Now in the right hand pane, find the connection speed that you usually obtain.

13)Right Click this value and select MODIFY

14)Alter the 3rd and 4th values to 80 25 respectively (eg If see 02 00 EA c5 00 00 00 00 then change to 02 00 80 25 00 00 00 00)
When you make this alteration, the character at the far right will change to ----%----, if it doesn't then recheck the entry.

15)Repeat as required for all the connection speed you obtain (or for every single value if you are bored !

16)Close REGEDIT

17)Restart the computer.

18)Log back onto the internet

Win2K and Whistler / XP

1)START then select Run

2)REGEDIT

3)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

4)SOFTWARE

5)MICROSOFT

6)WINDOWS

7)CURRENTVERSION

8)UNIMODEM

9)DEVICESPECIFIC

10)* STANDARD560000 BPS V90 MODEM

11)RESPONSES

Now follow the steps from 12

* The actual entry will be specific to your modem (hayes=hayes rather than standard, etc ), but will be underneath the devicespecific key

If the above has been done correctly, windows will report that you have connected at 9600.(Don't worry you haven't, this is just a quirk of windows that I'll explain if you really want me to , but really isn't relevant).

18)Enjoy you increased download capacity.

PLEASE NOTE If your downloading from a server on the otherside of the world, along with 6000 other people, you won't get a fast download speed, but if the server is not full and is not too many hops away you will notice the differance.

Please feel free to post queries.

its bullshit. The modem is capped. It can't exceed the 56k (maybe a little bit of extra buffer) so it's not gonna happen. You might be able tweak it to get an extra k but its not gonna make a huge amount of difference. Also 56k users rarely max out (8ks) so it probably would be possible to tweak the reg and maybe go beyond the 9-10k mark.

With the appropriate compression a 56k modem can reach speeds of up to 12k a second easily or speeds the original poster has suggested.

I do doubt whether a registry key will be able to make it go faster though.
