one time I managed to get out to windows when the game crashed and saw a VPU recovery error message.
and I have lowered the graphics and removed dynamic lightning and all that stuff..
also updated my graphicsdrivers

AMD 64 3500+
1024 RAM
ATI 700x 265 mb

Got a couple of ideas. Check your sound, make sure it is set to the lowest setting do not use any hardware acceleration. Due a complete check to make sure that you have no spyware. Also check your processes, if you have to many up and running when you start your game this can cause you comment charge to rise, causing the game to crash.

I had the same problem with my 9800 Pro and X800XL before. Several folks from rage3d.com recommended to up the AGP slot voltage from 1.5 V to 1.6 V. I've tried that and haven't been getting crashes lately, although it hasn't been long enough to see whether it has really solved the problem. Give it a try.
The forums at rage3d.com is a good start for these sort of problems.

I dont have AGP tho, I have PCI, does that matter?
and another funny thing. when the demo came out I could play it fine, until last week or so when it started crashing..
and not both it and FEAR crashes the same way..
I played through the demo 3 times without a single crash before the problems began. |
It may but i dunno for sure...speaking from a personal experience, AGP is the way to go, rather than PCI.

I doubt you are using PCI... More something like PCI-e (e=express)... Don't think the X700 line is avaible for standard PCI...
You could try to simply turn off VPU Recover. It has never worked as intented for me atleast.
Go into the Driver settings (right click desktop and so on) and look for the tab named "VPU recover" turn it off and see if that solves it...

Sounds like a faulty card to me.

As Sedolf suggested it should be a overheating card then. Take a look in your PC when it is powered on and see if the fan on the GFX is spinning/very dusty.
If it is dusty, clean it up if it is not spinning RMA and get a new one.

I had the same prob with my X700 Pro PCI-e running Act of War:Direction Action. I kept getting VPU recovery every once in a while but it was the actual game's fault. I haven't had a single problem with any other game. And like you, when I turn off VPU recover, it would give me a black screen. Maybe you should try updating to latest catalyst drivers?
