PAL PS2 version, every now and again the game save is reported as being corrupt when the game is next loaded, am using an official PS2 8mb memory card which has around 3-4mb free on it.
Anybody out there had this or heard of something similar and maybe even how to fix the problem?

Sounds really weird, especially since you have an official memory card. Have you tried with another one? There is a chance that the card might have some bad sectors and therefor fail to save.
Or if it's possible to save on another slot (like slot1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), try that.

I've got another memory card so will give that a go and report back, this is really miffing my son off as he gets so far into the game and then has to start all over again.
