Did you try erasing any registry keys that might have been left over from previous versions, or demo/prerelease version of max 8.

I had no install error what so ever, but I did uninstall my previous 3ds max version. I didn't cleanup any registry.
If you hate it, ignore it.

Fixed it!
If nothing else works, as in disabling antiviruses, antispyware etc, and if it isnt the same error as the raysat error, then make sure you have a file called services in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
The files you should have there are;
hosts.ics
lmhosts.sam
networks (no file extension)
protocol (no file extension)
services (no file extension)
I only had the hosts file there! The support dude tought it was very wierd, so he advised me to check any other computers in my house, copy the files from them, and paste in my computer. And guess what, it works!
Kinda fuuckin odd, that the reason for 1 installation of 1000 that i have installed since i got winxp dont work because of some files that i never ever had in the first place, lol!
Never ever had those files in my entire winxp experience, i didnt have them when i was running stock win xp pro, i didnt have them after service pack 1, i didnt have them after countless formats and reinstallations of the service pack 1 edition, not even after service pack 2.
