My search still goes on to find a good desktop experience. Im currently using windows XP with 2 "launcher" bars (Z'Y Dock), its nice but I want something a little less OTT. I just tried the blackbox shell's and I loved them, but they where such a pain to setup and get going, Id prefere something which is just as light weight but has some good application launching capability. BB2 with a launcher bar would of been great, had BB2 not been cluttered with links to programs I didnt have, and also the whole lack of a desktop is annoying..
Well probably wont help you much and I'm not even sure it's still around like it was.
But ages ago I used litestep, was always good and stable to use, worked well in xp as well. A bit fiddly to set up but if you find a good theme it can actually be productive...
