I want to get back into this genre which was once my favorite but every game that comes seems to be steeped in hardcore realism meaning, requires a joystick. So are there any games still left that can play with a keyboard and mouse?

Freespace 2 is the best action space sim game ever. It just beautiful. YOu can't call your self a space sim fan and not have played Freespace 2 (1 is missable).
Independence War 2 (haven't played one). A little odd and the controls aren't perfect, buts its an enjoyable and relatively long game.
Tachyon. I didn't really enjoy it myself, but it was kinda good.
Freelancer is fun for a long time. But it will die out eventually.
Ands of course, X2 and X3. Though, those are quite 'hpyer Realistic". X3 does better on a mouse though.

I'm a huge fan of everything from Elite to Privateer to Freespace 2 (X2 was decent but not great, X3 I'll try after they patch it to a playable state)... and I lasted about 2 hours into Freelancer. Never tried it with mods but the base game is one of the worst I've ever played. It's not even right to call that game a sim.

TheBugulous wrote: | Freelancer was sweet - great combat with the mouse controlling the amount of yaw/pitch of your craft. Good aliens & some wicked "big" battles. Kinda short though & at a certain point in the game, you're forced to "do the story" else you can't get new ships & upgrades.
Still well worth a look at only a single CD <gasp>
Hope MicroSuck release a version II |
I don't and they won't, because it failed miserably both in reviews and sales.
I have Elite on one 1.44mb floppy somewhere...

I was actually working on a mod for freelancer but I just don't have the time. I was going to "realistic-ize" the game a bit. Someone made an exe hack that allowed the buying and selling of a few ship components (mainly engines though) and I was slowly revamping all the ships to
a) handle more realistically (inertia, acceleration, etc)
b) be upgradeable based on size and cost, but limited by power plant abilities
c) have engine and powerplant upgrades
Essentially you could supe up a Liberty fighter with a bigger powerplant and better engines, but depending on how much power the engines used, you'll lose out in offensive strength, as bigger guns draw more power, etc.
But I never had time to work on it. I think a have 4 or 5 modded ships, but nothing balanced for fair play. Not sure if I just scrapped it. Digital Anvil had left alot of the work already there and seemed like something they planned on implementing. Too bad they didn't delay release and finish the game properly :/
Still, one of these days I'll finish my mod
i can has computar?!
