do the alpha fade with a motion tween. your retangle got to be a movieclip. do it normally between two key frames. then add a third keyframe after the last one of the motiontween (scaling). in that tween break the mociclip iback into a shape (mark and hit strg+b). now you can do a shapetween with it. just add another keyframe some frames after the one with the shape and tween.
