just bought a set of 5.1 speakers for the PC, now i am wondering what some of the best sounding games have been, past and present. i know most games support this (well, mostly FPS games though) but i want to hear something really good.
thx

The difference is hardly noticeable if you have good 4.1 system

Probably because you haven't configured the game's audio settings correctly.

Most fps-games are good for surround in my opinion. One of the best is however Max Payne 2, not because its very new but because of the slowmotion you really get to hear each projectile pass you and hit the walls behind you.

Call of Duty 2 and Doom 3 hands down. Far Cry is just 2 channel even if you select surround in the options. Half Life 2 they didn't tweak the sub channel too well so if you get gunshots to sound right, explosions and certain ambient noises make your ears blead.

For great surround sound fire up DooM III & turn your room lights off - just have the glow from your monitor. Sit back with a few cans of the good stuff & explore the auditary horror that is D3 !!
You wanted a Miracle, I give you the F. B. Eye !!

When I had a creative Soundblaster 5.1 soundcard, then I had great sound and surround.
But now with a built in 7.1 AC`97 or whatever it's called, the sound and surround quality sux.
Gonna see if I can get enough cash soon to buy a Audigy 2..
I hate you.

There is no killer app unfortunately. When I got my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum pro hooked up to my slightly old Logitech 5.1 setup I went through the process of installing every game known to mankind in an effort to get the perfect sound experience.
The only game I didn't try was DOOM III and that was because I didn't like the game itself. But I do remember it supposedly having a great sound engine built into it?
DVD is the best for making use of the sound system so far.
DOD:S is good - but you get the same effect on any sound system. Nothing to do with you're expensive hardware.

Racing games would probably benefit a lot. Don't play them much myself though.

ps. San Andreas has very good surround as well. (eax 4)

Doom 3 mainly because it was design to fully appreciate a surround system. Game itself was crap but oh god in heaven did it sound good.
