I loved the original UFO: Enemy Unknown
This pile of shit ... well... it sucks. The feeling is blown away by the wind and the camera is like zoomed up so you can see what brand it is on the characters glasses...
And the resolution?... maximum 1024*768, you're joking right? We have bigger monitors than 15" now...
I heard that 1280*1024 was gonna be in the full game but I doubt it'll make the game any better...

The original is always the best. But then, it wasn't Cedega who published the old original games. Ahh, maybe I should play old UFO: Enemy Unknown..
At any rate, I'm looking forward to the release of this game, it's been a long wait. The demo had me smiling, seems they have worked on the tactical part quite some. And the PSI vision mode is just plain awesome. From what I have seen, there are plenty of different vision modes, ranging from night vision to heat sense.
As said, it will be a pleasure playing this game. Keep up the good work, Cedega. I will definitely hold th ebox in my hand as soon as it is released here in my city.

aftermath blew chunks, expecting more of the same since thats what the devs said basically in interviews. all devs who remake a classic turn-based game and convert it to realtime(or realtime with some fancy fuckin name for 'addin a pause button') should be run over, hung from a tree, and shot. my 2 cents.

Silent storm destroys this and its like 1-2 years old..this is a pretty poor offering to the turn based scene.

From the demo, it looks awesome:
First, this is not a sequel to any of the UFO games. It has been mentioned many times by the devs. They simply wanted to make a game that takes the same - ufos invade the earth - plot.
UFO: Aftermath was .. well.. shallow, extremely annoying in its difficulty curve and full of bugs.
Then again, this game promises to make up for all those past mistakes they made with UFO:AM.
- They finally added - or so it seems from the paused geosphere view you get in the demo - a correct top level strategy layer, which was entirerily missing from the first one.
- Tactical layer got a new physics engine, 3D rotation options, multiple levels within the same area, etc. Its really nice to have your guy fly 10 meters back when hit by a rocket, then slide down a sloope and stop on a big rock halfway down the hill. The different views - heat, psi (just to name those i know of) - are also awesome. Nicely done, and they add even more depth to the tactical level.
- Weapons can be modded with different accessories, like scopes, silencers and stuff like that, just like in jagged alliance.
-) Someone mentioned the extremely zoomed in view. Well, first of all, there is the zoom in / zoom out button. Then you can also set the camera angle to an almost completely top-down view, you can hide tall buildings / objects (only show them to a certain level), just like you did in original UFO games. Did i mention, that you can rotate the camera as well? I spent a few hours with the demo, and the tactical controls are more than sufficient for any given situation.
Not to mention the cool mini-map and the ability to specify where you want to land
-) About real time. Personally, i always preferred the 'real time with pause' option over 'real time only' or 'turn based only'. Why? Because movement / actions MUST BE SIMULTANEOUS. Otherwise it is just a big 'who did shoot first' game. Real time however makes it impossible to carefully plan and evaluate situations. This is when the pause option comes handy. With pause, you get the best of both worlds. Real time combat with the luxury of time you get from turn based games.
Just a few examples what you cannot do in turn based games. Attack from 2+ sides simultanously, Lay down an impressive suppressing fire, and watch the attackers die while your soldiers just continue the task you gave them, kill your attacker while a deadly missile is flying towards you - Actually, i did manage to win a game that way once, in UFO:AM.
A stupid alien fired an alien missile at my rather beaten group of surviving soldiers. The only reason i won was that the soldiers took the alien out before the missile hit, and since that was the last one, the mission ended
So all in one, i can't wait to get my hands on UFO:AS. It is like XCOM + JA2 + UFO:AM. All of these contained nice elements and this one seems to combine them just fine for my taste.

Well, in turn based mode, your units usually move one after the other, and the reactions to the actions of your units also happen sequentially.
Example:
In XCOM:UFO, i had actions, when my soldiers were approaching an alien from two different angles. One fired a shot, the alien reacted, turned around and killed my guy. The next one also fired a shot, the alien reacted again!!!, turned back, and killed the second guy as well. (Hey, they had sniper plasma 'do not aim at my planet' guns at that time, and i only had paintball guns)
Now in a real time context, i would simply time the two guys so, that they both appear at the same time, start shooting at the same time. One of my guys may die anyway, but since the alien can't fire at two different targets simultaneously - which he can in turn based mode - i'll most probably succeed in taking him down with little or no casulties.
Another example is grenades. Imagine an alien throws a grenade at your feet. That's game over in turn based mode, whereas in real time, you can start to run away the moment you spot the grenade, or even better: pick it up, and throw it back (in case it is timed, and not exploding on impact)
The only real advantage of turn based mode is that it gives you 'infinite' time to think while the situation is basically 'frozen in time'. In real time, the pause button gives you the same freedom, without sacrifying the continuality of action.

Well, i have no idea, but i'm a bit worried. I usually get my games the 'alternative' way for one simple reason. For some stupid reasons, every game arrives 2-4 weeks later than the world release date. To our shops i mean.
Now since i can't order software from the net - a member country of the EU is not good enough for most of them to deliver to it seems - and can't buy software from local stores, as they simply do not have the new stuff for 2-4 extra weeks, i'm left with little to no choices (apart from waiting - which tbh i'll not do in the 21 century)
I'm about to order some plane tickets to germany and back in case the game is not 'out' by monday. just kidding (although i really checked prices, but the tickets cost more than my monthly salary).

Well, the more i play the demo, the more convinced i am that this game is going to be 'the one'.
After all, what were the key points that made xcom:ufo the absolute king for many of us?
- open ended gameplay, where you are not bound to some stupid and linear and repetitive mission sequences
** well, i know little about the actual storyline of aftershock, then again, the last one was right, apart from the insane difficulty curve, when prior to mission x you were able to solve about any mission with a single soldier, whereas after mission x you had your entire team wiped every few missions.
- a nice strategy game with all that belongs to it: resource / base management, research, expansion, strategic planning, even some limited diplomacy
** As far i can tell, we have all this. Meaning we have resources (money), factories where we can build our own stuff, labs to research new techs, other factions to keep track of in terms of diplomacy, etc. How much freedom we get in choosing our missions / direction to expand - i don't know. I just hope, we get more than in the last game.
- an amazing tactical layer, with multi-level buildings, destructible environment, lots of weapons, etc.
** I can just say, that - based on the demo - this one has them all. Even more. A lot more. The only thing i was missing is some visual display of cover (and the hit chance reduction it causes - in case it does), plus the ability to aim at specific body parts. Then again, i think i'm too much of a dreamer with these It would be like taking the best of JA2, Fallout and UFO, putting them together in one tactical game.
I managed to find one real flaw of the game tho. I DO NOT HAVE IT YET. :/
Conclusion: this is THE ONE. this MUST BE the one.
