I favour NBA 2K6 over NBA Live if you wanna know why check out some reviews of both games and draw your conclusions from them or better still get them both and judge for yoursellf. I just think in every department this year they outshone EA's games by a fair margin. TV Style Presentation, Gameplay, Graphics, Atmospheric Sound, Different Game Modes, Depth its all there.
If your looking for something a little arcadey to play with a bunch of mates then get NBA Street Volume 2 and Volume 3, I list both titles because I know some people prefer Volume 2 ever so slightlly over Volume 3. The games got over the top moves like something from the AND1 tour, you can play as some of the best players in the league as well as legends like Wilt Chamberlain and bonus fantasy characters like Biggie Smalls.
Plus theres a great "Own the Streets" mode which involves you building a team from scratch and recruiting players. If this mode is anything liike it was in NFL Street 2 then you can import your Street Player from the game into NBA Live 06 which is what I did with Madden 06.
If you want a little nostalgia and don't mind outdated rosters then theres the remake of NBA Jam.

College hoops 2k6 by 2k games is out this week. Get it. It beats the socks off the pro game. It's deeper, and the college atmosphere knocks the socks off the NBA. The historical teams are amazing too... For example you can play in the Michael Jordan North Carolina team. The game doesn't come with rosters but you can download them within a few days of the release. IMO this is the best sports game every year, and I'm not even a big Basketball fan.
