A 9700pro give the exact same benchmark results as a 9800 non pro, they have the exact same clock speed and features, there's a very small memory speed difference and that's all.
With my 9700 pro and XP300 + 1gb ram I played Doom 3, Far Cry, Deux Ex 2, Thief 3, Toca race driver 2, Painkiller, Splinter cell PT, and many other recent games, all at high settings, 1280*1024, and some of them with FSAA 2x or even 4x on.
FPS are getting pretty low, I feel the need for an upgrade but unless you got for a X800 XT or a 6800GT/U it doesn't worth it as the 9800 serie wil only give you a 5-15% performance increse for a couple of hundreds of dollars.

I've owned a 9700 pro since they came out about 2 years ago and I have to say they still kick arse with the best of them. I paid £300 for it at the time and it has been well worth it. Mine isn't overclocked or anything fancy and it still plays almost everything I throw at it at high detail at 1280*960 (I don't use 1600*1200 because my monitor will only do it at 60hz.) Personally, I'm going to wait and upgrade when the PCI-E cards take off so the preformance leap will be big enough to justify the cost.

I agree with roadrunner, only upgrade when the performance difference justifies the expenditure. Unless you're loaded.
If you can still play moden games satisfactorily then you can afford to wait.

Yup, my thoughts exactly RoadRunner, i got a R9700PRO too. I've been trying to upgrade my (oldish) AMD 1.4 for over a few months now but in the end i just keep putting it off. There are so many new standards that kicked off since spring im afraid i'll just throw money away on stuff that'll be obsolete in a few months :/

mrt, nothing is obsolete in a few months. That 1.4ghz machine can still run games, just not well technology isnt going at THAT fast a rate if you ask me, especially processors.

Yeah, if you buy a A64 3200+, which are rather cheap now, you'll have a processer that'll last a couple of years. By then it might be like your 1.4ghz is, struggling with the latest games but they'll still be playable.

BTX is the formfactor of the future wich will soon replace ATX. Remember guys, ATX was designed at a time cpus had 10w, now they have up to 107w (p4e 3,6GHz). So introducing a new formfactor is a necessity and amd will sure follow intel with btx.
For me, the cpu, motherboard and ram is a unit, wich means i never buy the newest technology just to have the possibility to upgrade one of them. The past experiences showed me that it is a waste of money, because technology develops so fast. And you always pay extra for being early adopter.
Concerning the 9700pro: I don't think its obsolete, because you sure can play all modern games with 1024x768. I own a 9500pro and won't upgrade now, x800 or 6800 is still too expensive and i can't mention a single game thats worth upgrading (no, not even d3 ). And buying a new card just to have some reserves is not smart, it's better to buy the performance when you need it, this way you can save some money

Im inclined to agree with you whoknows.
MRT, you have to give in at somepoint. All of us end up having to upgrade and our computer wont be at the top for very long. I just buy what I can and let it last as long as I can until I can get some newer stuff.

The 9700 still play ALL games decently at high details at 1280*1024, many of them still can be played with FSAA 2X/4X. Even Doom 3 and Far Cry run fine with high details at this res, if you got a decent CPU and ram of course.
The 9800 serie doesn't worth the upgrade if you have a 9700, 9700=9800non pro.
I just upgraded my 9700pro for a X800, didn't make a so bug difference in my life. My games doesn't look much better, but at least it's definitively smoother as the 9700pro have much lower FPS in those last high tech games.

::qcx: so you recommend upgrading from 9700 to the X800? I mean is the X800 worth the upgrade price?

You sir are on crack.
I want to see a screenshot of doom3 running at 1280x1024 with those settings and an FPS in the corner. I have a 9800Pro and run at 1024x768 with High Details.

Maybe your sytem is not well optimised and maybe you didn't tried those fix that help a lot increasing Doom 3 framerates on ATI cards...
I just sold my 9700pro as I have a X800 now, but I have 291 screenshots from the whole game I took at 1280*1024 (JPEG's resized at 1024 for web sharing), I took those while playing the game with the 9700pro, if it haven't been playable I wouldn't have played the whole game with those settings!
I even played most of it with FSAA2x activated, after using the Catalyst 4.9betas and applying the Humus tweak. Those both 2 little tricks and some other config files edits improved the Doom 3 performance on my 9700pro greatly without compromising any of the visual quality.

3 samples of those 291 pics I took while playing with the 9700pro:

Well, it's all about your budget! If that kind of money isn't a big deal for you, sure it worth it! But otherway it doesn't worth it at all as you already have a decent card witch let you enjoy every single exsisting game on the market with almost all the eye candy on.
I like my X800 a lot but it didn't changed my life, my gaming experience is not completely different, just smoother framerates (2x better) and a some more FSAA.
