The only way to increase internal hardware transfer speeds is by getting faster hardware, or putting the hardware onto a faster bus (which generally also means new hardware.). You will find that SATA and SCSI drives are much faster at transfering than IDE drives, more so if the SATA/SCSI is onboard, it might be worthwhile looking into new HDD's and a SATA controller!
Aside from this your transfers should be going as fast as they can physically go across the media to which they are connected.

Your speed will not increase if you use another program to transfer. The only thing that might come would be a little speednote or something like that.
Get Total Commander and you can see the speed... Sure there are more programs too...
Only way to get faster speeds is getting faster hardware (just as sYn said)

We'll for coping I use Copy Handler. Visit this site http://copyhandler.com/
I believe it more efficient than Windows. Besides it permits to pause what you are copying. It even stacks the copy process. And it gives you a pretty accurate time estimate. Maybe this can help

Standard SATA drives, contrary to popular misbelief, are not that much faster than PATA drives.

TotalCopy is just like the original windows copier, but you can see and modify the speed with it..
I hate you.

I sdon't think that you'll get any significant faster speeds by using an appliation, as said before it's mainly controlled by your hardware.
But I do like the looks of the Copyhandler tool...I'll try it out myself.
The pause funvtion is just what I need

I don't know about copy handler, but TotalCopy does:
http://ranvik.net/totalcopy/
All you need to do is drag an item with the right mouse button, and select TotalCopy here. It supports pause and resume, and also resume after a windows crash or a reboot.

This is actually an interesting question. I've personally coded tools to increase transfer rates of big files on one and the same NTFS partition by first reading a rather large chunk (say 20 mb) and only then copying it to another location. In theory you save some seeking time, and in practice i got about +2-3 mb/sec speed boost.

What can also boost transfer times is defragmenting your harddrives on a regular basis so all the files are neatly arranged together thus reducing seek time and giving a little speed boost.
Don't use the standard windows defragmentation utility though, use a real one, such as O & O Defrag.
