The client itself is free, but you need the game data from the original TA.

No, the game is completely standalone -- The full installer is 39mb off the Clan SY site, and runs completely independent of the original TA.

That actually can be considered 'official' in a sense, since Chris Taylor is in control of the project. It will basically be Total Annihilation 2, but without the Total Annihilation 2 name.

Yeah, I like how they have that 'super-unit' thingy, where you get to build 1 super unit that is freaking massive, and when it walks around it even crushes friendly units that may happen to be under its feet.

I must say this thread has gone in directions I never expected it to.

But... to get back on topic, maybe, is anyone here a regular player of spring? I just finished a pretty intense 2v2 battle.

For anyone who has not seen the spring engine in action, here is a video that might interest you.

Yes, there is a good amount of people playing Spring online, and there is a very good game browser / lobby client included with the game.

And Mchart, would you please stop picking fights, going off topic and just drop it? Im sure you can find another thread in which you can discuss the lyguistics of the word 'free' and legal factors surrounding the warez scene.

Thanks a lot.

deleted the "free=stealing" discussion in order to keep this thread about the game. Also added spoiler tags to the first post to help the layout

Thanks Apex Very Happy

Also: If any of you guys are playing online, my screen name in the Spring client is Cpl_Thugenomics ...PM me and say hi or to play a game!

Another cool thing about Spring, I don't know if any of you original TA players ever used any of the numerous unit packs or total conversions for it (i.e. Uberhack, TAUCP, Absolute Annihilation, or even TA Kingdoms) but Spring supports all these, so there is a great variety of new units to use, and there is a large map making community as well, so there is always some thing new to check out.

Another kind of cool feature is that you can now 'take control' of any individual unit -- you click any unit, and press 'c' and then you can drive around your tanks, boats or planes from a FPS perspective. Its kind of a novelty, but really entertaining, especially if you can find a friend to do the same and have a duel. You can also fire your long range artillery (i.e. Berthas) in this mode, which looks rather cool.

Did I mention the explosions? They are easily the best looking i've ever seen in a RTS. They have this lovely 3d burst, and then lingering smoke afterwards. The shells leave actual, permanant 3d craters in the ground; the battlefield is always a mess after a long artillery exchange. Shockwaves are also rendered into the explosions, which leads to amusing scenes of lighter units getting hurled across the screen, when a large rocket lands. You've really got to see it to appreciate it, of course. The link to the video at the top of the page will give you some idea of what i'm talking about.

For people who are unfamiliar with the resource system in TA, it may take a little while to get used to. But I can only say, once you get it down you will find spring to be one of the most rewarding RTS experiences that exist.

To be honest I'm put off by the fact it is 3D. I'll download this later in the week and see how it goes, thanks for the heads up though because it does look interesting (and I was swayed more by the video you posted, so kudos).

The great thing is that there are different camera modes, so its only as 3d as you want it to be. Most spring players use a traditional, top down 3d mode that is practically indistinguishable from the original total annihilation.

The nice thing is that you can tilt the camera though, if you ever want to.

Yeah, the original TA was actually the first 3D strategy game.

No, there are some AI scripts that do work now.

There are basically 2 (beta) AI's :

NTAI

JCAI

I think NTAI is a little more developed at the moment. If it is saying 'you win' right away, then make sure you havent placed the bot on the same team as you, or that you have allied with them inadvertantly.

Also, I know one of the AI's only works with the CORE race; try setting the bot to CORE.

If you still cannot get it to work, you can start a game by running the actual TASPRING.EXE, select 'YES' when it asks if you want to be server, and then load the 'RANDOM ENEMIES' script. This will let you build a base, and have random enemies spawn on the map, and start to attack you.

Hope this helps, if not, PM me or ask for help in the Battleroom lobby; i've found the community of players is usually pretty helpful to new players.

this game is pretty nice, but when it comes to epic battles with hundreds of on-screen units, empire earth 2 is still the best game out there.
but these supreme commander looks very interesting, i really like the graphics style, high-res 2d, i hope the animations are fluid, thats the most important thing when it comes to 2d gfx.
